Don't ever let this happen again to James Bond. Quantum of Solace is his 22nd film and he will survive it, but for the 23rd it is necessary to go back to the drawing board and redesign from the ground up. Please understand: James Bond is not an action hero!

The violence in his (Craig's) first outing, "Casino Royale," was notably intense, and while Quantum of Solace is not quite as brutal, the mood is if anything even more grim and downcast.

Stripped of "Royale's" humor, elegance and reinvented old-school stylishness, Quantum has little left except its plot, which is rudimentary and slightly barmy, in the line of the Roger Moore pics of the '70s and '80s.

The stunts are as muscular and the film as handsome to look at as the hero who so ably pulls them off. But the story linking it all together is thin and weak.

The point is, wherever he is, this James Bond is pissed. And that ceaseless anger begins to curdle every sequence that might otherwise bring a little happiness. I mean happiness for us, the viewers.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 14+

Craig's 2nd Bond grittier, angrier than his first.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that the second James Bond adventure starring Daniel Craig is, like 2006's Casino Royale, full of non-stop action sequences and has a darker, grittier tone than earlier Bond films. Unlike his predecessors, who barely broke a sweat while sipping their precious martinis, Craig's 007 bleeds real blood and gets into dirty, bare-knuckle, hand-to-hand fights. The violence includes knife fights, gun fights, fist fights, and fire fights. A liked character dies, a woman is tortured (off camera) in a particularly cruel manner, and dozens of characters die in explosions or shootouts. There are a couple of passionate kisses and one scene that obviously takes place after Bond and a woman have had sex (her bare shoulders and back are shown, and he's shirtless). Product placements are mostly cars, like Bond's signature Aston Martin, and language is relatively minimal ("s--t." and "bastard").

  • Families can talk about what makes James Bond "cool."
  • Is it his remoteness? His amazing physical prowess?
  • Does the movie usealcohol and cigarettes to support or take away from Bond's appeal?
  • Howare different women portrayed?
  • What makes James Bond soappealing (and enduring) in general?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Revenge, espionage and corporate greed are glamorized.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: James Bond is largely motivated by a thirst for revenge and seems tohave little regard for human life. He does save the life of a characterhe barely knows, however, because he senses she's in danger. FelixLeiter disregards a directive he feels is immoral. Several charactersbelong to a global crime syndicate involving multinational corporationsand billionaires who can act like mercenaries and destabilizecountries. A female foil to Bond is out for vengeance.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: From the movie's first scene, there's a nearly endless stream of action and violence. There are fiery explosions; bloody hand-to-hand battles using knives, guns, pipes, and other weapons; shootouts; disturbing scenes of a tortured woman and a dying character; and lots of death-defying stunts.

  • sex false3

Sex: Bond passionately kisses two different women throughout the course of the film. In one scene he gets into bed shirtless and kisses a woman whose bare shoulders and back are visible. They've obviously just made love (off camera).

  • language false3

Language: Infrequent: "s--t," "bastard," "bloody," "ass."

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: Several cars: Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Ford, Volkswagen, and more.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Bond characteristically drinks cocktails, wine, and beer at bars, in a plane, and at parties; other characters drink and smoke cigarettes/cigars.

good not great by movielover554
I recently saw this movie. The plot was pretty decent. It invovled a secret underground organization and bond being mad at someone for killing his girlfriend in the previes bond. The action was great. It included of a car chase, a runing chase, a boat chase,a plane chase, and a fight in a burning building. One of the major problems with this bond was there was no moneypenny and no gadgets from Q. To tell u the truth Q wasnt even in the movie. In the 1900's the coolest parts of the bonds were when Bond uses Q's gadgets. Casino rayol had this problem too so if ur new to the bond serius this is a very entertaining movie. Daniel Creg isnt my favorite job but he still managed as a very good bond in this movie. So overall it was a very entertaining movie and a great addition to the bond serius.

Quantum of Solace by love2ski88
Overall I thought the movie was pretty good. Unfortunately I really disliked the cinematography during the action scenes. The short choppy cuts with way too close camera shots were disorienting and made it extremely difficult to follow the action. What appeared to be some incredibly good stunt driving and flying was turned in to a disorienting mess! My son also did not like the camera work and at 14 I would think that he is the target audience for that type of camera work. One of the best things about the previous Bond movie was the foot chase at the beginning of the movie. It was tough, exciting and didn't have any cg or bogus Hollywood Dukes of Hazard type of stunt work. I enjoyed Daniel Craig as Bond again and I continue to think that he is a great, gritty choice for Bond. Right now in my family he's currently running second behind Sean Connery for best Bond

Quantum of Solice by film princess
I would recommend this movie to any bond/action movie fan. The action scenes are great and keep you on the edge of your seat. Daniel Craig is a fantastic Bond - a great actor not just eye candy. My only criticism is that the story wasn't as well developed as Casino Royale. The film was so fast paced that I could have easily watched another 20-30 mins had they wanted to develop the plot between the action scenes. Enjoyed it overall though and can't wait for the next one!!

Falling Short of the Franchise by bherm88
I am a die hard Bond fan and was waiting for this movie to come out since the first trailer. I was at the theater at midnight last night. However, when it was over, I was sorely disappointed. As a movie, it was not bad. The acting was good, the action scenes were exciting, and Daniel Craig was a great Bond. However, it was not a great Bond film, failing to live up to any previous franchise benchmarks. Bond is not a special ops killing machine like Jason Bourne. The way this Bond was written for Craig was off the mark for the character. The movie was just Bond kicking through doors and killing people indiscriminately. It lacked the cunning espionage of past Bond movies, in addition to Q Branch and exotic locations. The plot was weak and underdeveloped. Daniel Craig can be a great Bond and his emotion was an interesting addition but hopefully future Bond movies are much more in line with what Bond is supposed to be, not some box office whim.

Quantum of Solace by Sttrk2
Daniel Craig is way too cold for 007 in this second installment as James Bond! As a woman, I want James Bond not only to be good looking and sexy but approachable and certainly loveable. This James Bonds is as cold as the ice in the martinis he drinks. The car he drove had none of those inriguing gadgets like previous Bond cars. The story was boring and seeingly endless. Fires and explosions do not a movie make! While the Russian young lady was very beautiful her non-romance with Bond left the ending flat. Two beautiful people and no romance..... boring!

Don't hate! by Martino7
many people are still bitter at the idea of Daniel Craig as James Bond... Screw Them! this movie was filled with non-stop action and its so far a great build up of James Bond. you don't just see James Bond as a gentleman anymore, he is also a bad***, which in my opinion is Amazing. Don't listen to the dumb critics. Go watch Quantum of Solace.

Quantum of Solace - Title with many meanings by auntie_dino
I read several reviews of this movie before going to see it. Most of the reviews were correct; plenty of violence/action in this new Bond. Certainly more so when compared with Daniel Craig's Bond intro Casino Royale. Like the first, Daniel Craig's fight scenes are more realistic. He gets plenty bruised and bloodied. If compared with fight scenes that Sean Connery and Roger Moore had in their Bond films would understand. Don?t get me wrong, I still think Sean Connery is the most suave of all Bonds and Roger Moore the best wit/humor. In fact each actor has added his own flair to the character. What I thought lacking was ummm....dialogue. Most of Craig?s lines were less than 6 sentences and some of them were two/three words. Judy Dench has more dialogue then anyone in the film it seemed. I am a huge 007 fan and will still add to my collection. However, if the 007 franchise is trying to attract a new/younger fan base eventually even they will want more story, dialog, finesse. Is the new

You NEED to watch Casino Royale... by SneakySF
You NEED to watch Casino Royale before seeing Quantum Solace to fully understand whats going on. The movie takes place right were the last one left off...with Bond finding Mr. White and continuing the rampage, bent on vengeance, they led up to in the last movie. There will be no special gadgets or super slick transforming cars! But that's OK because when you're a trained assassin on a killing spree you won't need much...a shard of glass or anything lying around with a pointy edge will do. This is definitely a more gritty but sophisticated version of Bonds that relies on you being a fan of the last movie AND having an attention span big enough to listen to all the dialog between action sequences. A MUST GO for fans of the last one and GO for Bond fans in general because you don't have to understand the details to enjoy the destruction that follows a P.O.'d Bonds.

See it to say you've seen it by Luvmandms
Lots of mayhem and destruction, typical of a James Bond movie. However, he goes thru the whole thing denying his actions because of revenge, but that's exactly what he's doing. Best to see it to set the plot for the next one, but I would have taken a pass on it, if my hubby hadn't dragged me to it.

Bond market collapses by Jac DC
The new Bond movie had all the makings of a great film- a good lead actor, good follow-on story line and, well...it's a Bond flick. Unfortunately, the writers decided to make it a confusing montage of disjointed scenes and a non-existent story. Where is the Blowfelt vilian we could identify with? Where's the dramatic event in the beginning of the film that tells us why Bond is even on the screen? Even though I got to the theater early enough to see the pre-movie ads three times, I felt like I had missed some critical event that explained what the hell was going on. As for the ending, I think they still need to film it...nothing happened...
