Mature crooked-cop drama is no Departed.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this police drama tackles mature themes that aren't likely to appeal to younger viewers. Older teens familiar with stars Colin Farrell and Edward Norton may be interested, but this is definitely a parents'-night-out pick. There's hard-R language (including "f--k" and its derivatives) and realistic violence that includes multiple shoot-outs and execution-style murders, a suicide, a baby's life put in jeopardy, and a substantial amount of blood. The sex is limited to married couples kissing and embracing and one quick glimpse of a moaning drug dealer and his girlfriend. Drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol are prevalent.
- Families can talk about the characters' various moral dilemmas. The men were stuck between loyalty to their brothers in blue -- not to mention their actual family -- and their duty to serve and protect. Even unethical characters aren't completely villainous. What motivated Jimmy and his crew to become corrupt? What do you think would have happened if Ray had made a different decision? How is this movie similar to other cop dramas? Do you think this kind of movie needs to include strong violence to be seen as realistic? Why or why not?
The good stuff
-
Messages: The film's main themes revolve around moral ambiguity, criminal justice, family loyalty, and greed. All of the gangsters portrayed in the movie are Hispanic, while nearly all of the cops are white, but this isn't inaccurate considering the New York neighborhood where the action takes place. A cop calls Spanish "that monkey language."
What to watch for
-
Violence: Violence is realistic and bloody. Dead bodies are shown lying in pools of blood; people are shot execution style; blood splatter is visible on windows and on the ground; a character commits suicide by shooting himself; two characters have a bloody fist fight; someone is beaten to death; a character threatens to disfigure/kill an infant; and more.
-
Sex: Couples kiss and embrace; a drug dealer seems to have sex with his girlfriend in front of other people.
-
Language: Strong and frequent language, most notably "f--k" and its derivatives. Other frequently used words include "a--hole," "bitch," and "s--t." Spanish speakers should be aware that there are also plenty of unsubtitled vulgarities in scenes featuring the gangsters.
-
Consumerism: Not an issue
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Drug dealing is a major part of the story, so there are a couple of quick glimpses of characters using drugs; several characters smoke and drink heavily in bars or elsewhere; one man is portrayed as a borderline alcoholic.

Just another copy... by dallasite
If you like movies about cops gone bad try a couple of the classics "Magnum Force" (Dirty Harry) and "Internal Affairs", you really hate Gere in this flick and love it when he gets popped by Garcia.

A very good movie, with non-stop action. It is a under rated movie and it deserves more recognition.

Worth watching at least once.. by johana42
This movie was pretty good... worth watching at least once... but I don't think I would repeat it. If you like suspense- or trying to figure out "who-dun-it" this movie is not for you- the plot is pretty transparent from the beginning. There are some scenes that will make you squeamish. I did like that a part of the movie was filmed in my neighborhood- so I was always looking out to see if I knew where they were. Overall, kept me entertained for the two hours... but honestly, if I could have waited to see it onDemand too...

Just Got Home - Mixed Feelings by ndrone1
This movie really is under-rated. I've barely heard anything about it before today and I did not mind the slow start at all. Acting is superb throughout. Script is a little disappointing at times - the F bomb is dropped about 8 milllliiioonnn times which is effective in giving the movie an edge, but also degrading to the point that it's almost a laughable word by the end of the movie. The plot continuously thickens and really kept me on the edge of my seat, however the ending was a little offbeat. Still not bad, but I wouldn't have minded staying another 30 minutes or so for more development near the end. There are a few people in the movie that do not get an ending. You're left wondering what happened to them, but there is no resolution... and this is not the sequel kind of movie so I'm not so sure how I think about that. Overall- pretty well written, excellent acting, good plot, great setting (everybody loves an NYC movie) and probably loosely based on a true story. 4.5/5 * from me.

Excellent Movie....A Must See by jmccloy77
I don't believe how people can say this was not a good movie. It is a good movie. It tells the truth about some cops today. Hiding the bad side of them. They feel being cops, they have the power over everything. They let there badge speak. This was a good movie. I do agree however, with one thing, just the times when they were speaking spanish. Could have added subtitles so everyone knows what is being said. But other than that, this was truly a good movie. I definately recommend this to anyone. Edward Norton and Colin Ferrell did a good job together. Good chemistry between the 2 actors. Definately go see it.

Zipadeedooda! by hosaia
Just saw this flick and I expected P&G to be a pleasant diversion, but wasn't exactly prepared for the POWERHOUSE ensemble performance it, in fact, undoubtedly is! The production team headed by Director/Screenwriter Gavin O'Connor, co-Screenwriter Joe Carnahan, and the talented acting skills from ALL cast members headed by Colin Farrel, Edward Norton and Noah Emmerich, have kicked a three-point field goal out of the stadium with this unexpectedly dense, complex, but thrilling police drama. I was totally blown away! Moving from shocking surprise to nail-biting suspense, this team has presented a completely engaging and confident portrayal of a law enforcement family in crisis--having to choose between loyalty to each other, or to their beloved department. I advise anyone who enjoys great adult-themed movies that spin slightly towards mystery but with a healthy dose of psychological intrigue to check out Pride and Glory--NOW! Leave the mega-plex, big-budget tripe to neophytes--be warned!

Pride and Glory by jdgfilm1
This film is done really well. Colin Ferrel and Edward Norton I think give an excellent performance. Yes, Yes people say "well its the similar story of Cop corruption" but I thought this film was more than that. The script was I think done very well and all the actors gave a great performance. The only thing that I guess would stop you from seeing this movie is if your not a fan of Collin Ferrel or Edward Norton. But I don't think that is an excuse because it seems they both went into their characters for this film and came out with a good result.

Really well acted movie. All the actors did a terrific job. It is pretty scarey to think that this kind of stuff really happens.

A strong movie with good acting. Got an free ticket? Go watch! by gansvv
Great performance from Colin Farrell and Edward Norton. A bit heavy movie though, with a strong theme about corruption among NY cops. The bar scene fight was the only "light" part, when folks in the theater broke a smile. The music was good, but the storyline was mostly predictable, except for the radical conclusion. Leaves you wondering where they tried to do a Serpico?
