Powerful, painful account of Harlem teen's hard-luck life.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this powerful indie drama based on the novel Push by Sapphire is a harsh, raw depiction of a Harlem teen’s brutal life that may be too intense for many viewers, even older teens. The main character is abused in every way imaginable (emotionally, physically, sexually) by those who ought to have her best interests at heart (including her parents) -- and yet she persists, rising above her circumstances. The language is coarse throughout the movie, there are many scenes of household violence (slapping, kicking, pushing, etc.), and sexual abuse abounds (a man is shown unbuckling his belt before he rapes his daughter). Still, it’s ultimately a compelling, thought-provoking film that will stick with those mature enough to handle it.
- Families can talk about the movie's themes. What do you think the filmmakers hope viewers take away from watching? Does a good movie have to be easy and/or fun to watch? What do we learn from going outside our comfort zone?
- Is Precious' seeming indifference to how she’s treated and how she copes upsetting or understandable? Or even admirable?
- What fuels Precious' desire to be a better mother and to have a better life?
The good stuff
-
Messages: Despite its many painful, cruel scenes and characters, the ultimate takeaway from this powerful drama is that no matter how persistently someone attempts to break you down, you are special.
-
Role models: A mixture of gruesome and awesome. Precious’ parents are vicious and uncaring (both are abusive, and her mother also handles a baby a little roughly, insults a special needs child, and calls her teen names), yet she finds a way to rise above it. Her teacher provides much-needed mentoring, and her new classmates offer friendship. Some cruelty among teens.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Overwhelmingly cruel at times, with a father molesting his daughter and a mother shown beating the same child -- including throwing objects (a television, for instance) at her and kicking her. One fight in particular is shockingly graphic. A man is shown unbuckling his belt and forcing himself sexually on a child.
-
Sex: Except for some dream sequences in which teens flirt with each other, all depictions of sex are either overtly or more subtly associated with violence (including assault). A woman is seen under the covers moaning, presumably pleasuring herself.
-
Language: Very raw, with frequent uses of "f--k," as well as "s--t," "bitch," "goddamn," "ass," "hell," and "oh my God."
-
Consumerism: Some mentions of products in the context of dream sequences.
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Some references to drug abuse, though nothing is shown.

Believe the hype. by vegs8
Powerful. Intense. Poignant. Witty. Heart-wrenching. Sad. Ugly. Beautiful.
I cannot, for the life of me, remember being so moved by a film. Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan come to mind, but this was a different. Even days later, I am on the verge of tears as different scenes creep into my mind. This heart-wrenching story brings someone you wouldn't normally be able to relate to directly into your heart.
Well written, impeccably acted, and full of profound intensity...one of the best films I have seen, definitely this year, and perhaps in the last decade. I recommend it so highly.

Preciously Inspiring! by flyfxs
I had the opportunity to view this moving at the Chicago pre-screening and it is one movie that shouldn't be missed!
I read Sapphires book Push a few months earlier and was amazed at the level of constant abuse this one teenage mother endured to find love, compassion and hope from the hearts and homes of strangers. I applauded Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey and Lee Daniels, and their ability to create a movie that was cinematically true to the book....BRAVO!!!!! Please, go out and see this movie because when you do, you will be compelled to "Push" other to see it too.

FOR OUTSTANDING ACTING..... by lovestalentmoviefan
...I recommend this as a Must Go film. Only if you like movies that are heart wrenchingly realistic and don't mind getting a true view of what other people's lives could be like. Definitely need to be aware of what subject matter is to make the decision to spend the money. I do not know Monique at all,but could watch her performance in this movie over and over, and still not be able to tell that she is just acting. I wanted more of what Precious's future held at the end, because once you have come to terms with certain realities in life, the climb out is pretty difficult, and it would have made the hope in survival more realistic to come by....knowing what the next step would be. It was incredibly filmed, and kept my attention all the way. Every actor was spot on. If you want fun and games, choose another movie. I will spend money on this again.

Passionate Performances will leave you breathless. by lboogie518
Okay, let me start by saying that I did not read the novel but heard all about the story from several people so I decided to go see the movie because the trailors looked good. The movie was very well directed and Monique and Gabourey played their roles so well, it felt like I was a part of the their lives. Even Mariah Carey gave an great performance (and I had previouslu given up hope on her after Sparkle). I should have brought a box of tissues with me had I known that I would be crying 3/4's of the movie! It was raw to say the least. The story, I believe is one that is lived by too many young girls in this world. This movie sends a message that against all odds, you can prevail. If this entire cast does not clean up at the Oscars there is something terribly wrong with the industry.

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire by bonosemovies
Those that play pick the oscars might want to check this film out. Now those who choose to see/brave it, better come prepared. First this girl will be nominated for best actress, i dunno know her, have never seen her before, but in this she is absolutley incredible. The subject matter is not, unless you think you got it bad, In that case you might see things in a quite a different light after this film. her performance is so way worth it. She deserves best actress nom maybe the prize in fact, If you wanna know whos the best actress this year, then you go. You also bring a hanky or five, and most importantly remember it is a movie. Granted one that doesnt know when to let up on its audience. It rips your heart out, multiple times and then puts it back in for a minute, and takes it out, then shows it to you, and by that time you dont know what is heading your way next. Its freaking refreshing to see a film go out on this limb, and a a triumph for a new star. Bravo!

PRECIOUS by ScrnWrytr6
Profound, harrowing, funny, powerful. Gets so deep under your skin it's less a movie than a primal experience. Oscar noms are guaranteed. Mo'nique is a shoe-in for Best Supporting Actress. First-time actress Gabourey Sidibe will win and break your heart. A must see!!
