A constant low-boil of ridiculousness both mocks and sustains Non-Stop, a jerry-rigged terror-on-a-plane thriller with a premise so far-fetched as to create a degree of suspense over how the writers will wriggle out of the knot of their own making.

Much of the fun is awfully silly. The story strains logic, as well as credulity. It's been cobbled together, often crudely, from pieces of classic predecessors. (Here snippets of Hitchcock, there stretches of "Speed," with wings on the bus.) Yet the silliness parades itself in a spirit of cheerful self-awareness, while Liam Neeson fills the thrill quotient impressively as an air marshal.

While it takes stabs at realism, mostly in its use of cellular and computer technology, disbelief must be suspended for full immersion in this twisty airborne thriller.

There’s a good measure of comedic relief doled out between the action sequences, e.g., Neeson coming up with an ingenious plan to placate the passengers when they’re on the verge of a rebellion. This is a movie that knows it’s not to be taken too seriously.

Once again Neeson is a straight-faced secret weapon. With his lion's roar and can-do fists, he grounds the film's more preposterous moments and makes them feel excitingly tense. At a certain point either you'll fasten your seat belt and go with Non-Stop's absurd, Looney Tunes logic or you won't.

The movie's fun. And now, thanks to our annual Neeson thriller, spring can come soon.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

OK for kids 14+

Tense, formulaic, action-packed thriller set on a plane.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Non-Stop is an action-packed thriller with plenty of edge-of-the-seat moments that may thrill teens. It could also scare off both young and old viewers from flying, especially if they're already skittish about it since the movie's so tense and realistic. The body count's pretty high, too, served up with a big dose of brutality and some gore, which may prove too intense for younger teens. Expect some swearing, including "s--t" and "d--k," and some drinking, too; one character is an alcoholic.

  • Families can talk about the movie's fear factor. How does this film tap into the collective fear about acts of terrorism, especially on planes? Does it have a political agenda?
  • Does the movie deal with any stereotypes and, if so, how does it handle them? Does it promote them or break them down?

The good stuff
  • message true1

Messages: Keeping your cool under terrifying conditions can only help you. Asking for help also makes a big difference.

  • rolemodels true2

Role models: Jen Summers carries herself like someone who truly appreciates what's important in life, and she helps Bill Marks out of a terrible jam. Nancy, the flight attendant, is also a great example of a cool, calm, and collected person.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Violence is at the heart of the storyline. A plane full of passengers is threatened by a terrorist traveling with them. People are shot, beaten, threatened with knives, shoved, kicked, you name it. Some of the brawls are so raw -- bones crunch, flesh rips, bodies slam.

  • sex false2

Sex: A couple makes out under a blanket. A man's phone reveals a series of photos of a woman's cleavage.

  • language false3

Language: Some swearing, including "s--t," "dick," "a--hole" and "bulls--t."

  • consumerism false1

Consumerism: A few labels are seen, including Samsung and Patek Philippe.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false2

Drinking, drugs and smoking: One man smokes secretly in the bathroom of a plane. He's later seen contemplating a stiff drink, but doesn't imbibe. A woman downs vodka, seeking liquid courage. A passenger is shown trying to take prescription meds to calm himself.

Non-Stop by regbra
We were reluctant to see "Non-Stop" because of the "So-So" ratings given by the critics. We are "So" glad that we ignored them and went anyway. "Non-Stop" is the most thrilling action-packed movie we've seen in a long time. Liam Neeson plays a troubled Air Marshall who struggles to find a villain who threatens to kill everyone on the flight...and starts doing so, one-by-one. Everyone on the flight is a suspect. In the end, the surprises make this even more enjoyable. "Non-Stop" is an entertaining flick that's well worth the time and cost.

Plot Holes, But Still Good by SCBRoslyn
I saw this movie on March 1st....I always enjoy Liam Neeson and was looking forward to seeing this film. It was good, not great. A lot of tension, a lot of suspense, a lot of action, and an interesting storyline. If you don't analyze this movie too closely while you're watching it, you'll enjoy it. I tried to ignore some things that left me thinking, "Well, wait a minute, what happened to..." or "I thought they established earlier that..." Since I don't care for movies that rely on computer generated graphics, I'm more than a little picky about that sort of thing. This movie does not rely on them, but there were times graphics were so glaringly bad, it ruined the authenticity of the moment. Aside from that, it's an entertaining enough movie. If you're looking for a real "thinker" film, this one won't fulfill your requirements.

Edge on the seat thriller by Cacowboy
Liam Neeson was the right actor for this movie. I'll be honest I was thinking how can you get the movie goers attention with pretty much the entire movie set is on a plane. Will it did and on the edge of the seat type of action, and trying to guess who the Bad Guy or Girl is. And you will be guessing pretty much all the way through the movie. You will say IT'S GOT TO BE HIM, NO HER ETC ETC. It is slow on take off but that is to be expected. The movie had a good flow leading up to the end. So well written and directed.

Non-Stop by earlr
Typical NIam movie these days. Non-stop action. The premise is someone on the plane is going to kill one person every twenty minutes until someone deposits $150 MM in his bank account. Lots of gratuitous violence. Audience moves from suspecting one character after another but, in the end, it left us wondering how various things were done by the perpetrator(s) without a very satisfactory explanation.

Non Stop by babigail
I almost did not go to this movie because of all the negative reviews. I went anyway. The movie was awesome. Ok, there were a couple of parts that were silly. Movies are suppose to be entertaining and this one was great! At the end, people applauded! So don't listen to those Critic "wannabees"! Go!

Better than expected by flick_dawg
Was not thrilled by the trailers but got a free pass and decided to see it anyway. I like Liam but his movies and acting are so flat and predictably one-dimensional that you know what to expect before you get there - this one doesn't break that pattern. The world is full of people texting and this movie is no different. Texting has made it to the big screen here which people will relate to consciously or not. The story wasn't believable but most moviegoers get locked into action and explosions so they will likely overlook this fact. Great movie for a Friday night DVD rental, matinee theater price, or snow day; but if the sun is shining I would hold off on this until the disc comes out.

NON-STOP by thedoctor777
Loved it! Liam Neeson is always giving an excellent performance in his films. It movie has suspense, excitement and a twist that demands your viewing dollars at the theater. The acting is A+ and the story is well directed. I recommend this one for sure.

Not 'great' but entertaining for what it's worth. by Squirrel Dude
Here we go again with Liam Neeson in another action packed movie to cheer for. Overall, it was a good, entertaining film. It did have some cheesy dialogue, but I guess in its way, it expects that. To be sure, it's not a 'great' film, but, it essentially works as a 'who done it?' I couldn't help but think, "Oh, I hope because he's a Federal Air Marshall, it won't preclude the public to think of another TSA embarrassing employee?!" That being said, I hope Liam Neeson will act in some more Academy worthy films in his near future? He's a good actor.
