Try as they might, the filmmakers never hit the outer reaches of imagination that both Kubrick and Bowie did. Which is not to say the film completely implodes into a black hole either.

The double role suits Rockwell perfectly -- in fact, it suits him a little too well.

The film's ideas are interesting, but don't feel entirely worked out, and Mr. Rockwell's intriguingly strange performance (or performances) is left suspended, without the context that would give Sam's plight its full emotional and philosophical impact. The smallness of this movie is decidedly a virtue, but also, in the end, something of a limitation.

Despite its handsome look and good thesping workout for Sam Rockwell, the story stretches a bit thin over feature length.

Moon, a superb first feature directed by Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son) and starring an impressive Sam Rockwell, is an intelligent, evocative and deceptively low-key sci-fi adventure.

Under Duncan Jones' kinetic direction, Moon also shines on the production front: Cinematographer Gary Shaw's shaded shots intensify the drama, and Clint Mansell's music heightens the psycho-scape.

Moon is a superior example of that threatened genre, hard science-fiction, which is often about the interface between humans and alien intelligence of one kind of or other, including digital.

MOON - shines bright! Rating: 92 out of 100. (Based on recent preview) by MOVIES REVIEWER
Recently, I was fortunate to attend the free preview of this WONDERFUL 97-minute movie by director/screenwriter Duncan Jones(son of David Bowie) in his directorial debut. MOON stars the talented Sam Rockwell who turned in a captivating and strong performance while carrying the movie practically on his own. MOON is testimony that Hollywood DOES NOT need to rely on heavy CGI and loud music/sounds to create a above-average movie. Devoid of all those distractions - the audience was treated to fine acting and a mesmerizing well-written plot. Major themes: solitude, loneliness, psychological health, life/mortality, trust/betrayal, etc. While MOON is not a 'Hollywood Blockbuster' - this movie will find a appreciative audience. VERDICT: GO SEE IT! MOON is one of the better sci-fi movies in recent memory.

Why in the world would you put a spoiler out there about the movie? You are the biggest jackass.

Moon by BJDallas
This is a movie that grows on you. I walked out wondering how this movie got such high ratings as it wasn't what I was expecting....No action, no great visuals. I was somewhat let down but it still did not stop me from enjoying the movie. The acting was great and the plot makes you think about life and the future. I enjoy it more today than when I walked out. Worth seeing.

If David Bowies ode to space was a song its only fitting his son would provide some visual aides by matttalbot71
Moon was a different, albeit, good movie. Moon is not a movie centered solely around how many CGI special effects you can fit, but more a dramatic character study. It is refreshing to see that a science fiction movie can have some substance. Sam Rockwell is brilliant and does double duty in this movie as well as Jeremy Irons did in Dead Ringers. Kevin Spacey is a nice addition to the movie and the interaction between Rockwell and Spacey is comical at times as well as heart breaking. The stage and visual backgrounds are amazing. Moon is not for everyone, the story line is deeply rooted in science fiction, and while the story is easy to follow it is at the same time very cerebral. Definately worth checking out if you enjoy dramatic movies or science fiction.

Interesting, perplexing, and thought provoking by rockydoggies
Don't ruin the movie for yourself, so be careful when reading spoiler reviews, this is not a spoiler on the plot so read on. I would usually expect this kind of movie in August because July is the summer-action shoot em up month. This is a great movie because it has you trying to size up what's going on, then there's a twist and you are not believing it for awhile. Once you realize what's going then you'll have several ethical and moral subjects to dwell on for later. Sam Rockwell was outstanding...about time ! I wish I could seat in a college classroom to listen to analysis and debate pertaining to the review of this film, just an interesting subject. Would you think something like this could happen ? Who knows..anything is possible especially when not noticed. This movie is not well advertised let alone placed in many theaters, which is too bad because it is a great film.

awesome movie by giozz21
i decided to go watch this movie because of the trailers i caught here and there online and at theaters, and i was honestly blown away. The movie is a great throwback to the good ol' sci-fi genre that has been missing on the silver screen since maybe 2001: A Space Odyssey. Great movie, i highly suggest it.

Moon by Rich S
This film is excellent on many accounts. It is a technically beautiful Sci Fi environment taking place in an [almost] completely automated Moon mining base. The story on the surface blends Asimov [I, Robot] and Clark [2001; A Space Odyssey] with a little modern "politics" gratuitously [and unnecessarily] thrown in; I suppose such was to give some kind of sophomoric level motivation to a few teenies and political activists. That however neither detracts from the film's interest nor from its existential plot. I actually felt the loneliness, both physical due to the moonscape and spiritually due to the hall of mirrors dawning of the sole operator's realization that he is just a player in his own life. Not to give away the story which is slowly unveiled both to us and to Sam Bell the "astronaut" about to return home after a three year "assignmnet"; the story mechanized for the viewer the feeling of "I" as relation not only with cosmos and other humans but also in relation to self. Bravo!

A REAL science fiction movie by Dimensional Traveler
This is a _REAL_ science fiction movie, not the kind of fantastical "blow-em-up" F/X showcase that Hollywood labels as sci-fi. There are no fantastic elements, everything is based on real current knowledge and technology. It is a quiet film, an excellent execution of a well written story based on "hard" science. Made with a budget that qualifies as pocket-change by normal movie standards (let alone summer blockbuster "Sci-Fi" standards) but done so well that you would not believe how little was spent on it. The protagonist is an employee of Lunar Industries (also the name of the company that made the film :D ) working alone on the far side of the moon on a three year contract. Unfortunately, telling you anything more would spoil the story. Well worth taking the time to find where it is playing near you (probably your local "art house" theatre).

It treats the audience like adults by drfnark
This is a very good film. It treats the audience like adults, trusts your attention span, and poses some very interesting questions about what makes us human and what it means to lead a meaningful life. The sense of isolation is incredible, and the sound design and score are phenomenal. Sam Rockwell does a very good job here, as well, especially considering he's in just about every single frame of the film. I highly recommend this.

At last, a sci-fi that doesn't demand a lobotomy by resnyc
Actually meaningful and restrained. Thought-provoking, beautifully filmed and authentically presented. Incredible acting, albeit a limited character. The plot is simple but not without intrigue or surprises. Great music/score. If you think science fiction is best if it's about gun-fights and alien monsters, don't bother, in fact, stay away because you're destroying the genre.
