Meet Joe Black has the dubious distinction of being the longest film to date of 1998. It is also one of the most tedious and bombastic.

Sometimes clever and enjoyable, even touching, yet too often the film makes you feel as if you're in Sunday school.

The movie contains elements that make it very good, and a lot of other elements besides. Less is more.

Classic by jkxfactory
This is a classic! Martin Brest direction was superb. The lighting, music, backdrop, actors and screenwriting are so magnificent that this movie will keep getting discovered with each generation. It will be like "It's a Wonderful Life" with hardly any major recognition when it first came to the theaters but a treasured classic. The only thing I felt that really holds it back is editing. The acting by Hopkins is absolutely crisp and stunning as usual, but he is given duplicitous dialogue. Pitt's ability to embrace both the lightness of his romantic character and then the ominous but innocent character of death is delicious. The often spoken quote, "Death never looked so good" is well earned. Every actor so amazing, however the scenes between Hopkins and Marcia Gay Harden/Claire Forlani were flawless acting of so many parent child relationships. 20-30 minutes of editing and a re-release has never been done but this is the first real classic that may be buried under unnecessary dialogue.
