Lucky You Review

Dave's Rating:

1.5

… boring …

Who's in It: Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Robert Duvall, Debra Messing, Robert Downey Jr.

The Basics: Down-on-his-luck Huck (get it? As in literary allusion to iconic mischief maker? As in "huckster?") is a Daddy-didn't-love-me-enough guy who plays poker for a living. He also sucks at knowing when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em, because he winds up pawning his life away and stealing cash from a would-be girlfriend (Barrymore) in order to keep up his addiction. They should have just called it Gamble, Gamble, Gamble, Gamble, Die.

What's the Deal? What I just wrote above is as plottish as this movie gets. When it's not nodding its head in the direction of the daddy-drama or the Drew-romance (and that's not often), it's all about the thrill of watching skeevy Vegas people playing poker. And then they play some more poker. Then later, they play some more poker. And after that? Poker! It's like watching one of those Yule Log videos or Puppy Bowl on the Discovery Channel. Wait, you know what? I take that back. Because Puppy Bowl is actually fun.

Best Stupid Line: Unfortunately uttered by Barrymore while she and Bana, stationed on a casino roof (check Showgirls for a similar tender moment of reflection) are gazing out at the city lights. She says, without provocation and not in response to anything Bana has offered first, "I think we're all just trying not to be lonely." But if I had to pick between loneliness and living my life with any of these boring characters, I know which one I'd go with.

Borat Connection: This movie's been sitting on the release-limbo shelf for so long that Ken Davitian, now famous as the man who nakedly wrestled Sacha Baron Cohen, shows up as a poker-playing extra.
