The Basics: It's a story everyone's experienced at one time or another in their lives: A very short jewel thief poses as a baby and leaves himself on your doorstep, and then you fall for the baby, raising him as your own. Then crazy stuff ensues, and he tries to breastfeed on your wife, and the mob shows up. That's what makes this movie so true, so much like real life — because it's a universal moment, one we can all feel good about.
What's the Deal? This baby has tattoos and muscles, does breast-milk spit-takes and can — how to say this? — satisfy the ladies. Are you offended by that? What about kicks in the groin? Pooping? Or are you just simply offended that it was made at all? Then stay home and watch The McLaughlin Group or whatever it is you serious people like to do. I'm in the mood for antics.
Why the Wayanses Matter: First of all, they do exactly as they please. It's usually crap, but it's crap that folks want to see. And that means they get the money and power to keep on doing it. It's great when Hollywood has to bend to the will of actual crazy people who've managed to tap into the public appetites. It's kind of like when they gave Tom Green 10 million bucks to make Freddy Got Fingered … except no one wanted that. So, fine. Bad example.
Why the Wayanses Matter, Part 2: They support each other, no matter what. You think they were all on board for White Chicks? Probably not. But there they were anyway, acting the fool on camera. And Chris Rock took notice at the Oscars, of all places. So this time one of them was like, "OK, a baby jewel thief!" and everyone probably went, "Sure!"
