A would-be psychological thriller with next to no psychology and shivers instead of thrills, The Page Turner is a nervous-making, lightly amusing vengeance story that owes an obvious debt to Claude Chabrol.

Though this film is as formal and predetermined as a carved palace of ice, it builds interest through the strong performances of its pair of costars, the veteran Catherine Frot and relative newcomer Deborah Francois.

Scripter-helmer Denis Dercourt's sixth feature is spare but classy, with an impressively controlled perf by Deborah Francois (the young mother in the Dardenne Bros.' "L'enfant") opposite popular and spot-on vet Catherine Frot.

THE PAGE TURNER = Mesmerizing Psychological Thriller by lugubriousthespian
French director Dennis Dercourt's new movie is a meticulously crafted, nearly plausible story of a young woman who exacts revenge in the most methodical ways imaginable. After being distracted during a classical piano audition by a high-ranking guest judge and subsequently losing out the opportunity to ever get into a prestigious school for music, Melanie waits ten years before being seaking a position as an intern at this woman's husband's law firm and slowly insinuating herslf into his family later on as a nanny for their only son. The woman, not remembering her, slowly takes her under her wing as her trusted page turner and slowly her devious plan begins to unravel in the most memorable way. A bit slow-moving, but all great suspense tales take their time. And the acting across the board in uniformly excellent, as are the productionvalues of this quietly disturbing, elegant thriller.
