The result is a movie with an exceedingly narrow target audience that should test Will Ferrell's appeal among boys maybe ages 12-14 -- about the only demo likely able to endure this laborious mess.

Lame sketch comedy, an uninspired performance from Will Ferrell and an overall failure of the imagination turn Brad Silberling's Land of the Lost into a lethargic meander through a wilderness of misfiring gags.

The only marginally interesting, if unsurprising, thing about the pricey movie spinoff of the junky children's television show Land of the Lost is that a lot of money has been spent on yet another cultural throwaway.

Like its characters, the film keeps getting lost too, stumbling as it struggles to keep kids and adults from squirming in their seats.

It's hard to know just who the intended audience is: The movie is too surreal and bawdy for young kids and too silly for anyone older than 25.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 14+

Ferrell's reboot of '70s show is rife with gross-out laughs.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this big-screen version of the cult-classic 1970s TV show has lots of vulgar language, as well as an extended sequence in which some of the main characters are clearly stoned on a natural narcotic/hallucinogenic substance. There's also a high degree of body-function humor: At one point, a character douses himself in dinosaur urine to mask his scent, an egg is removed from a huge pile of dinosaur feces, and a character is swallowed whole and later excreted by a dinosaur.

  • Families can talk about the phenomenon of '70s TV shows coming to the big screen. Does this represent the fact that these shows have wormed their way into the public consciousness because they were worthwhile -- or is it just about making money?
  • Families can also talk about Will Ferrell -- what do all of his characters seem to have in common? What's behind his comedic appeal?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: There's a hint of a lesson about standing by your friends and your beliefs, but it's mostly drowned out by slapstick and jokes. There's a high degree of body-function humor: Acharacter douses himself in dinosaur urine to mask his scent, an egg isremoved from a huge pile of dinosaur feces, a character is swallowedwhole and excreted by a dinosaur, etc. Discussion of enjoying show tunes being considered "a bit gay."

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Ferrell's character is an arrogant airhead, but he's not to be taken very seriously. Holly stands up for him when no one believes his theories.

What to watch for
  • violence false3

Violence: A man is torn to bits by hungry dinosaurs, and viewers see his severed limbs. Mostly comedic violence involving lizard-men or dinosaurs; some peril, but mostly limited to comedic rampages of destruction and mild scuffling. Some blood as part of a gag involving an exotic blood-sucking insect.

  • sex false3

Sex: Some kissing; mild lascivious language (for example, a river guide says to a young woman "You may get wet" as a fairly obvious double-entendre). Scantily clad women, as well as underwear-clad men, but the latter is primarily for comedic effect. A touchy-feely hominid primitive puts his hand on the breast of a young woman; a slightly more evolved human emulates that behavior.

  • language false4

Language: Extensive (yet genial) profane and rude language, including (but not limited to) "goddammit," "boobs," "damn," "bitchslap," "gay," "ass-ton," "pissed," "oh my God," "bastard," "s--tty," "p---y," a barely vocalized non-sexual use of t"f--k," "dong," "asshole," "crapballs," "dick," "Jesus,"Â "tap that ass," "son-of-a-bitch," and many more.

  • consumerism false4

Consumerism: Extensive mention of brands and TV shows, including Amazon, Cialis, M&Ms, Arby's, Popeye's Chicken, Subway, Florsheim, iPod, Sandals resorts, A Chorus Line, Iron Chef, the Latin Grammys, The Today Show (including a cameo by host Matt Lauer), Mama's Family, and many more.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: A pipe is displayed but not smoked; characters drink beer and wine. Characters also appear high from the effects of the nectar of an exotic plant. A character says of a tropical jungle "I bet there's weed in there."

FUNNIER THAN THE HANG OVER (and I loved the hangover) by fishguts56
Before I begin this let me say that I am an award winning college filmmaker and an avid movie goer. I went into LOTL with little expectations thinking it would be another chance for Will Ferrell to prove he still is funny. If you did not like STEP BROTHERS then I suggest you stop reading this review now. Just like Step Brothers this movie BLEW ME OUT OF THE WATER. My sides hurt I was laughing so hard. I left the movie thinking that LOTL might have actually possibly been funnier than that of The Hangover. Will Ferrell is absolutely hilarious and his co star Danny McBride is possibly just as funny as Ferrell. Now mind you that I had very little interest in the original Land Of The Lost and knew barely any thing about it. This movie is perfect for teens and up...it is not a little kids movie.

Good or Bad? by seebothsides
When I saw the previews for this movie, it looked really funny. Even my family wanted to see it. That's when I made my mistake. I thought that this movie would be farely clean. I was wrong. It's Will Ferell, he's going to be innapropiate, he's going to be fowl. It's the way he does humor. Did you ever see him on SNL? I considered it a pretty funny movie. I laughed through the whole thing. I didn't laughed uncontrollably, but it was funny. Now, I'v read several reviews here and some of them say, "It's horrible! Don't waste your money!" "Worst movie ever!" and others, "Best movie of the year!" "I can't wait till it comes out on DVD!" OBVIOUSLY, you really don't know what you're going to get when you go to see this movie. There people out there who like crude humor, and there are people out there who like clean family fun humor. My advice, if you like Will Ferell and crude humor, go see it. If you don't, don't waste your money or wait till it comes out on DVD.

Save your money, dont see this movie. I'm a big Will Ferrell fan but this was just horrible. Very stupid and pointless.

Reviewers are confused! by glemke33
I am amazed at how so many of the negative reviews for this movie start with something like "I am not Will Ferrell fan." I have only one question for these folks...why did you go to a Will Ferrell movie then?? Afterall you wouldn't order a chicken sandwich at a restaurant and then complain in a review that it didn't taste like steak!! If you don't know what you're getting with Will Ferrell by now, you never will!! Will does low brow, slap stick, double entendre type comedy with hits and misses along the way. If you went thinking you're were going to see a "Best Actor" or "Best Movie" nominee you are a sad, sad person.

Good movie by paintballer9809
What part of PG-13 don't you people understand!?!?! It means for teenagers not for little ten year olds! The movie was good and it had some funny parts and some not so funny parts. I heard alot of people complaining about the swearing because they had little kids there. What do you expect a PG-13 movie to have??? If you want a movie for them go to walmart and get spongebob or something! Grow a brain people.

Finally got around to it and it was hilarious! by HarveyDanger
This movie was seriously funny. I laughed throughout the entire movie. There was just some funny off the wall stuff and it was well scripted to make you laugh. I exited the theater in a great mood having had a fun time. I took my roommate who did not really want to see it and she was pleasantly surprised and thought it was hilarious as well. I watched the original series as a child and my roommate had never seen an episode and we both loved it. When it is available on dvd, I willl be adding it to my collection.

PARENTS!!! DOESN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO BEING A FAMILY MOVIE!!!! by jhigdon5
THIS IS NOT A MOVIE FOR KIDS. R - RATING WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE. Lots of bad language throughout, tons of adult humor.I took my 3 young boys to see this as they are dinosaur fans and left feeling like the worse mother on the planet. Lets see, my 7 year old only seems to recall the weird monkey constantly grabbing the "pretty" girls boobs, my 9 year old keeps repeating "Matt Lauer can Suck it" and informed me he thought the part where they say (over and over) "tap that ***" was hilarious, my 6 year old inquired during the movie why they called the dinosaur a P*s*y - and asked me what did that mean! (I said, Honey I have NO idea :) ) I would have found those moments in the movie funny had I not had my kids there. Seemed like a family movie by the previews. My fault for not researching it more first - I learned my lesson. Also, I never watched the show so I had zero expectations. Overall, a funny movie worthy of more than a few laughs - but for the grown up crowd.

Incredibly stupid fun in a movie by edge4life34
Ok, number one, this movie was based off a TV show created by stoners for kids. Number two this movie stars Will Ferrell and Danny McBride. Number three it's rated PG13, NOT PG. Keeping all those things in mind you already know it will be more stupid than introspecitve, it will have as little of a plot as the TV show and IT'S NOT FOR YOUNG KIDS!!!! So everyone complaining about anything covered by the above, go see another movie and shut up. However, if you want to laugh at things that make absolutely no sense and jokes that a 13 year old could have written delivered deadpan by Kenny Powers, I mean Danny McBride, then go see this, suspend your disbelief and enjoy it. If you're not laughing, you're probably dead or even more stupid than the jokes and you just didn't get them. You also have Anna Friel in a tank top and short shorts...even more reason to see it.

Not neccessarily for kids by bellaoreo
I am mid 40's so I grew up knowing Land of the Lost. I hesitated to go because Will Ferrall can be so crude. That he was. I told my 14 year old and a few friends. Many other kids were there and many 5-10. Will F. dropped the f-Bomb once which made me angry because there we kids in the theatre. They could have left that out. The sexual inuendos were many and most in bad taste. I do have to say, I did laugh more than I expected to. The actor that played the Will character was on all the time which made it entertaining. I would not have children under 13 see it.

I'm not sure what movie some of you saw but this film was awesome!! It was everything I expected and more.Fans of the original series should love this film. I'm not even a huge Will Farrell fan but he really delivers in this movie.
