Iffy for 13+
Touching-but-treacly chick flick for moms and teens.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that while it's been marketed as a teen-centric romance, the movie includes some heavy subject matter. Teen girls will want to see this drama thanks to star Adam Brody -- aka Seth from The O.C. -- but his character here isn't a teenager; instead, he's a man with women issues. A central character has cancer, and its onset affects her entire family. Plus, a teenage girl smokes, drinks, and has a combative relationship with her mother, and a sometimes-senile grandmother believes she's on the verge of death. There are a few passionate kisses, and the protagonist's job as an erotic-film writer is mentioned throughout the film.
- Families can talk about women's roles and mother-child relationships. Does being a stay-at-home mom make a woman worthless, without anything to show for her life? Why does Lucy perceive her mom as a failure and a fake, and how does Carter challenge Lucy to change her perspective? How does the media depict housewives? Is this film an accurate portrayal? Families can also discuss the difference between Sarah's relationship with her two daughters and how Carter helps the women around him feel better about themselves.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Lucy's ex-boyfriend clocks Carter in the face; another teen defends him by punching the ex.
-
Sex: Carter passionately kisses three different characters. In flashbacks, viewers see a montage of Carter and Sofia's relationship, including discreet glimpses of them making love in bed. Carter writes soft-core porn scripts and discusses a couple of scenes on the phone. Lucy confesses she had a pre-pubescent sexual episode. An extramarital affair is discussed in two pivotal scenes.
-
Language: Regular PG-13 curse words: "s--t," ""assh--e," "screw," "hell," and a few sexual comments about orgasms, seduction, and pornography.
-
Consumerism: Less than expected for a film marketed to teen girls: iPod, iMac, Mazda, Dairy Queen.
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Carter and Lucy smoke cigarettes. Underage drinking is evident at a high-school party.

Loved This Movie by vikingman2007
I've been waiting for about three or four months to see In The Land Of Women and tonight my wife and I finally got the chnace to do just that and I was very impressed with the way this movie turned out....The cast did a great job and the storyline was very well done too......When I saw the previews I had originally had thought it would be about how this guy goes to take care of his grandmother and then meets his next door neighbors daughter and falls in love with her but I was totally shocked to see that it wasn't that at all....It was a good story about one mans relationship with two women and how it helped him deal with the break up of a woman he just lost.....It was a truly beautiful movie and I'm glad I got the chance to see it..Go see it if you get the chance

Not What I Expected by LillieDesigns
I went thinking it was going to be a shallow teen movie, but was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty deep coming of age story. I enjoyed it.

Adam Brody kows how... by Joseph Z.
Adam Brody knows how to make his character real and therefore, we believe in his role as Carter Webb. Brody is very nuanced performance in "in The Land of Women"; the women in his life while visiting his grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) give first rate performances, too. It is refreshing to see a film where you can't predict what is going to happen next and the characrers behave in ways that are how we really behave in our life situations.

I really liked it! by Freedom_Writer01
The moral of the story was good! It's a great comedy, and romantic drama movie. It had great actors, and I enjoyed pretty much every part of the movie. A lot of people didnt understand the end or something? I understood... You have to think about it, sure, but once you do it's pretty clear. Cant wait to get it on DVD!

multi-faceted movie by supermommy
We loved this movie. It had something for everyone. Not a mindless chick-flick, but raised numerous issues, mother-daughter, fidelity, maturity, the meaning of love, etc. If you take the time to look at the issues/questions raised, you find there is a lot of food for thought and discussion. A great movie for mothers and daughters to see together to open many areas of communication. On top of all that, it is a highly entertaining movie with above average acting by the entire cast. Hilarious too.

False Advertising by sgt4328
The movie was not bad- Adam Brody is irresistible in it. However, they advertised it as a love story between Carter and Lucy, and that is just not what the movie is about. Look out for Meg Ryan as she steals the scene. If you go in knowing what the movie is truly about, then it should be good.

I liked it by laughfactory
I'm a sucker for romantic comedies. While this isn't really a romantic comedy, it definitely had it's funny moments. While the ending felt a little off to me, it was authentic, and the story that proceeded it was a fun ride. Perhaps a little typical in some of the drama, but at least the film managed to avoid making it's material feel overly stale. That makes it sound like I didn't like it, but I did. Over all, for those who like emotional, generally uplifting, chick flicks with some humor...you'll probably like this one.

In The Land Of Women by Darkwatcher
My daughter and I went to see this movie and yes I really truly enjoyed it. She did too! I cried and my daughter's eyes well up (she said she didn't cry because the tears didn't actually fall). We laughed and I cried. The acting was really good. The youngest daughter is a hoot. We totally related to this movie because we have lived and are living with some of the issues that were portrayed. My daughter even asked me during the movie if I wrote it...now that was funny! I suggest you grab a friend or a daughter and go see it.
