A high-energy, low-impact caper-comedy that labors to bring a measure of wit, romance and glamour to an overworked spy-thriller template.

In this oddly uninvolving caper, the size of skulls makes its own statement: The producers assume that audience interest in movie stars is bigger than audience interest in characters.

It's hardly a perfect film, not even close, but it is the most entertaining made-for-adults studio movie of the summer, and one of the reasons it works at all is the great skill and commitment Cruise brings to the starring role.

Diaz has one of the most winning grins in the movies. Basically, what I wanted was more of it. Some of that Cary Grant dialog. More flirtation. More of a feeling the characters, not the production, were the foreground. More of the stars.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

OK for kids 14+

Action romance has high body count, little consequence.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that although Knight and Day is a globetrotting action thriller, it has strong comic/romantic undertones and a cheerful, playful tone that makes the violenceseem almost inconsequential. And despite the body count, there's very little blood or gore. Expect plenty of flirting between stars Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise and a little kissing, with some brief talk about sex. There's also some drinking (including one scene in which Diaz's character gets drunk on tequila), and various "spy"drugs are introduced throughout the movie. Neither of the main characters are depicted as strongly positive role models for teens, but that's not what the movie is about, either -- ultimately, it's meant to be a fun adventure for adults and older kids.

  • Families can talk about the movie's violence. What impact does it have? How does it compare to violence in movies with a more serious tone?
  • Is June a strong female role model? At what point does she begin to take action on her own?
  • What role does trust play in the story? How does trust affect June and Roy's relationship?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: The movie's key theme seems to be that if you want to try something exciting, go ahead and try it -- without too much concern for consequences (even when death and killing is involved). And as June starts hearing different stories from different characters, she must learn to follow her heart and trust the right person.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Though June eventually finds her footing and her strength, she's very passive for large portions of the story. Roy shoots and kills several bad guys over the course of the movie with no consequences or remorse -- but he's clearly meant to be a good guy who has the best intentions and a positive outlook.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: The movie is filled with action violence (much of it played for humor) -- including guns, hand-to-hand combat, and lots of other fighting -- but has little gore or blood. The body count is fairly high, but the impact/consequence of that fact is contrasted by the film's overall light tone. The hero is shot, and viewers see his bloody (but minor) wound. There are also drug-tipped needle darts, several explosions, car chases, motorcycle chases, and bull chases.

  • sex false2

Sex: The two main characters are clearly attracted to each other, and there's plenty of flirting and a few major kissing scenes. In an early scene, June preps herself in the bathroom, hoping for some kind of connection with Roy when she emerges. In another scene, the couple rolls around on the beach. In a late scene, June (while under the influence of a truth drug) says, "I'd like to have sex with you. I bet we'd have great sex." Roy changes June into a bikini while she's drugged, which angers her (even though he says he didn't look).

  • language false3

Language: Languag includes a few uses of "s--t," one "f--k," and terms like "hell" and "oh my God."

  • consumerism false0

Consumerism: A Bud Light ad is visible on the side of a building for a few seconds.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false2

Drinking, drugs and smoking: During a tense plane ride in the first section of the movie, June drinks a lot of tequila to calm her nerves; the scene is played for comic effect. Roy also takes a drink. The agents are also always slipping various drugs to each other; June gets a "knockout" drug twice and a truth serum once.

Action packed date flick by butteredkorn
My this was a great action packed movie with some great banter between Cruise and Diaz. If your looking for something breezy and light, something to just escape todays stress this is it. Think Bourne Identity but with a comical flair.

KNIGHT & DAY- unexpected delight! by debora7n7
I was able to view the sneek preview and was presently surprised! Cruise and Diaz are a great team, they play very well off each other. For me, the scene stealers were the comedic scenes-I thought the theater was going to ask me to leave I was laughing so loud. I liked the action from start to finish, the story line was a little predictable but very entertaining. This is a definite recommendation. Group recommendation: 13 yr and older.

WOW! by mbc-u-later
I'm not a Tom cruise fan . . . I'm not an action movie fan . . . don't know why I wanted to see this film. I'M SO GLAD I DID!!! It is amazing! Great plot, great actors, funny as hell, and just plain FUN! Super summer film!

Oh My Goodness! by Jordan402
This is a great movie. There is action, comedy, and the ever-present sexual tension between the two gorgeous leads. The story is fairly easy to follow though it seems some elements to the story were only mentioned in passing. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz play their respective roles wonderfully. Knight And Day is best for adults, but is not gory and can be readily viewed by kids.

After a few disappointment in the rom/com/action.... by lovestalentmoviefan
department, this was a decent success. Not a Cruise fan,but he was on target the whole time.Couple chemistry was good for once and kind of a cool story that you can follow. Too many outlandish action scenes, but still liked it for a one time viewing. Better than Killers by far, better than Bounty Hunter, more action than Just Wright, not as good as Date Night. Biggest plus was the actors just gelled.

good movie by jenn998
I thought this movie was going to be stupid and regretted entering the theater, but was very surprised...it's a really good movie, that's action packed, sort of funny, entertaining, different....non-stop action, with a good storyline and pretty good characters....tom cruise and cameron diaz both do a good job and their chemistry is really good...diaz turning into the freak chasing tom cruise's character, after having been conditioned almost, is kind of interesting too...overall it's pretty cool and definitely recommended to check out

Top Notch Thrilling Action Romance Comedy Packed Summer Smiles AKA Summer Film Coaster by healingmoon
Not only can Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz make you laugh as you are swept away on an outstanding summer action adventure, reminiscent of Romancing The Stone meets North By Northwest; they can act. These two well seasoned cinema-graphic experts are aging like fine wine both complete with award winning Colgate smiles and Bogie/Bacall appeal. This movie transports you around the globe faster then Carmen Sandiago, more powerful then James Bond and able to leap a tall well deserved Action Oscar ( its about time ) Category in a single bound. A definite 2 hour plus summer escape hit leaving you completely entertained and putting your whole self in...... And isn't that what its all about?

Knight and Day by popcorn bucket
I am not a Tom Cruise fan but my son wanted to go and see this movie. I found myself laughing out loud. There was no obscene language that most movies today seem to have. There was lots of violence but no blood and guts that I do not care for. I was surprised when I heard the radio talk about it being a bomb, so I felt like I needed to put my 2 cents in. I really enjoyed this movie!

Knight and Day by mamrox2000
We loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be...action packed, exciting, great chemistry between the leading roles, a little romance and a great ending. It was particularly exciting to know that Cruise did all of his own stunts--amazing!! And Diaz' participation in the stunts were remarkable as well. They were really fun to watch together. Can't even imagine how some parts of it were filmed. We plan to see it again and perhaps purchase the DVD when it is released. I think there's a bit too much killing for younger audiences, but high schoolers and up will find it perfect entertainment.
