A second-rate regurgitation of "The Lord of the Rings." Everything about it, down to the set and costume design, apes Peter Jackson's epic trilogy. However, while "The Lord of the Rings" was a grand story of scope and power, In the Name of the King feels small in more ways than one.

OK for kids 12+

LOTR copycat is so bad it's good -- for laughs.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this is an epic fantasy adventure in the style of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Despite the overwhelming number of negative reviews, tweens -- especially boys -- may want to see it, partly thanks to English action star Jason Statham (The Transporter). There are several intense, violent battles between orc-like creatures and the kingdom's army and civilians, but very few bloody deaths (it's obvious that many, many people die, but it's not graphic). The sexual content is limited to three or four kissing scenes between two couples -- two of which occur in a bed. The language is remarkably tame, and, this being a fantasy flick, there are no product tie-ins.

  • Families can talk about how this film was influenced by The Lord of the Rings movies. In addition to the presence of John Rhys-Davies (who played Gimli in Rings and is Magus Merick here), what scenes, characters, or themes reminded you of LOTR? Do you think the similarities were intentional? Why? Also, is the violence in this movie realistic or not? Why does that matter? Does the lack of strong language and graphic violence mean this film is targeted at younger audiences?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Gallian and the Duke are obsessed with power, even if it means destroying an entire kingdom. The rest of the main characters are all courageous and selfless, willing to die for their cause.

What to watch for
  • violence false3

Violence: Several violent battles between the kingdom's townsfolk and soldiers against Gallian's troops of "gurks." Many deaths, but they're not graphic/bloody. A child is killed, but it happens off camera.

  • sex false3

Sex: Gallian and Muriella kiss and fool around (clothed) in bed; he makes reference to "taking" her virtue. Farmer and his wife also kiss a few times, including once in bed. Duke Fallow has a young woman sit on his lap while he gropes her chest and arms.

  • language false0

Language: Minor -- one or two uses of "damn" and "hell."

  • consumerism false0

    Consumerism: Not an issue

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Duke Fallow drinks wine and asks for it before a duel.

Stupid people.... LOL by sancho2613
Well Paul Disastro the point is even if these are sneak previews and whatever little clips u might see here and there what's the point of writing any kind of REVIEW if you haven't seen the movie yet? I'm sure you're all smart people and can figure out what a REVIEW. I don't see how you help anyone by writing about a movie you never seen, giving your "opinion" about a movie is really something nobody here cares about give it to your friends instead because we come on here to read REVIEWS not opinions, or whether the previews look good or not. Maybe there's somewhere else you can you can talk about your "opinions" wich really is worthless cause you haven't seen the movie. Give your opion AFTER you see the movie and if you don't want to watch it then don't even bother coming here just to say "it looks crappy" or stupid things like that wich don't help out at all

In the Name of The King by teamradrz1
Let me first say I love movies and almsot find them all entertaining. This movie was just plain bad the acting was horrible, alot of the costumes were horrible for the era, the cast had some great actors but they were not in their comfort zone of what they portrayed. the only saving fact that kept me in the theater is my youngest (11) seemed to be enjoying it. Halfway through people started to leave and then the blatant rip-offs of other movies, (like Matrix, and LoTR) had the audience cracking one liners which had everyone LOL. I blame this fiasco solely on the director as the special effects were cool and I could have looked past the evil guys costumes, but the movie had no flow and and it really seemed like none of the actors tried to give a good performance. I thought to myself they must have sold their souls to the devil to get into the movie buisness and this movie was the devil collecting his fee.

NEVER EVER SEE THIS MOVIE by Hamilton101
I have never written a review, but I am compelled to because I have never seen such a bad movie EVER! I can't even come up with one redeeming quality, except for Jason Statham. All else was a joke. Casting, acting, fight scenes and plot, pretty much everything! HOW DO YOU SAY LOSER KINDLY.

"Sucks" doesn't describe it. by chadc
Have you ever heard that term "she could suck start a Harley"? Well, this movie taught her how. Wow. I thought I was going to see a fantasy movie. Turns out the only fantasy involved was that of the director, fantasizing that someone might like it. I'd rather watch the uncut video of some third grader I've never met playing the clarinet at his four-hour band recital. Burt Reynolds and his wig give their worst performances since Canon Ball Run (II). And... remember how cool Ray Liotta was in Goodfellas? Well take the photo negative of that, and you have his performance here. Man, what happened to that guy? His acting is worse than his complexion. Oh, and I've seen scarier creatures trick-or-treating at the mall. It would have been cheaper and less painful to stop by 7-11, purchase two of those laser pointers, tooth-pick my eyelids open and stare into them for two hours... while listening to a Yanni CD.

Save your money. by BrianLeichty37
This film has got to be the absolutely worst video game adaptation movie I have ever seen. Uwe Bolle (or however his name is spelled) should not be allowed to make another film like this because it ruins the game and the film that it is based on. Anyone that plays games like Dungeon Siege is not going to like how this idiot ruined it. I have no idea what the story was supposed to be, because there was never any sense of a beginning, a middle, or an ending. I sure hope that this fiasco doesn't ruin Jason Statham's career, because he is one hell of an actor. Kristanna Loken should have known better after that Bloodrayne snafu. Burt Reynolds and John Rhys-Davies looked like they didn't know what they were doing. Although I will say that Ray Liotta made a very convincing villain, that was not, in my honest opinion, what was needed to make this movie believable. Ron Perlman did a good job portraying his character, but that wasn't enough.

Disappointing by MisterSteve
Disappointing.... I was expecting more of the movie, especially due to the cast of the movie. Here are several reasons for my disappointment: - mid-evil them with modern day fighting moves and ninja warriors - poor video quality - Bert Reynolds as the king - fight scenes that include duplicate shots

Disaster! by PhunneL
First time writing a review. Come here religiously to read other reviews. This movie has stained Jason Stathom there is no doubt. Even he seemed as though he didn't care. Like the director was off in his tent while a 9th grade drama class directed the film as an extra credit class project. No Character development in the beginning. Writing was a collection of cliche' from other movies like Gladiator, Lord OTR, Planet of the Apes, and Braveheart. Actor choice was all wrong. Ray Liota!?!? as an evil las vegas side show sorceror with hair gel? Burt Reynolds as... well anything in this type of movie?! Matt Lillard probably was drunk the whole movie. Terminator 3? She can't act... Just why? DO NOT GO. And boycott the future airing of this film on any pay channel sites, or you will be left with a vestige of Jason at his lowest suck.
