Horror sequel brings more of the same creepy scares.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Insidious: Chapter 2 is the sequel to 2011's terrifying horror hit Insidious, featuring many of the same characters in similar situations. Like the original, there's little or no gore, sex, or language (a couple of uses of "s--t," plus "goddamn," "hell," etc.), but you can definitely expect a lot of very scary, disturbing, and shocking imagery, as well as some fighting (characters bash each other with household objects). The main young boy isn't separated from his parents in this film, but he is shown to be in danger. Bottom line? If you're not a veteran horror fan, this is the stuff nightmares are made of.
- Families can talk about Insidious: Chapter 2's violence. How much blood and gore is shown? Do you need that stuff to make a "horror" movie?
- Is the movie scary? How does it compare to other scary movies you've seen?
- What's the general appeal of horror movies? How is this ghost story different from a movie about, say, a serial killer?
- How does Insidious: Chapter 2 compare to the original Insidious?
The good stuff
Messages: Characters try to help one another in this movie, even entering into frightening and potentially dangerous situations in order to do so.
Role models: The supporting characters -- the paranormal investigators -- are the ones who seem the most heroic and interesting. They're forever forging ahead into frightening and unknown situations in the quest for knowledge and also to help others. They're sympathetic, brave, and supportive.
What to watch for
Violence: The movie is filled with very scary images and sounds. Some of the sudden shocks will send sensitive viewers jumping out of their seats. Some disturbing images come up as well, as when the father is seen attacking his wife and attempting to attack his children. In these scenes, characters hurl household objects at one another and beat each other up. Ghosts attack a young boy. Characters use a Taser gun and a syringe full of sedative. A dead body is shown, and a tiny amount of blood is seen, in a photograph and on a knocked-out tooth.
Sex: A married couple is shown kissing.
Language: A few uses of "s--t," plus "hell," "goddamn," "oh my God," etc. A character refers to his "nuts" after falling down in a dark room.
Consumerism: Not an issue
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Not an issue

Great sequels DO exist! by qdaw99
I just recently saw the first part and I was impressed; the issue with horror movies these days is they're lame and not a bit scary. What's unique about Insidious is it's a horror/thriller hybrid. Its got a great storyline - this one's storyline moves a bit faster than the first, but they do a good job of recapping the first movie so you don't have to have seen the first to get what's going on and at the end of the day I was just highly impressed with the execution on the script. The CGI, acting, etc. was all on point! Its reminiscent of the first Saw movies but as they started producing more, you could tell the idea wheel was running out. This is positioning itself to be a franchise like Saw but the trick with this is you have to keep things fresh and new to keep people interested - in other words, Paranormal Activity is the same movie just re-written in different ways to tie new characters to the original cast but its quickly running out of steam.
Good horror film by ValkyrieNYC
I agreed to see this, although I still haven't seen the first film (I bought it ...), because of the work James Wan did on The Conjuring, which is a really elegant horror film. Well, he did his magic here as well. He's telling the story, not trying to gross out the audience, and the scares he builds here serve that story. I'll continue to follow this director's work, because he understands that true horror is not gratuitous gore, it's giving the audience just enough to get their imagination to fill in the blanks .... because that will be more frightening than anything he can put on the screen. Bravo, James Wan!
Not the best horror sequel i've seen! by Dillon B
I seen this on opening weekend with a group of friends and I was expecting this to be as scary as the first. This made me jump 1 time but that was it. Don't go into this film expecting it to be as scary as "The Conjuring". But this film is a rental not a theater going experience!
Silly movie by jcapp1
I do not know what possessed me to go see this movie. Get it? This movie was just down right silly. I had already forgotten most of the first movie and that didn't help. I don't remember the first one being this bad though. Don't go.
Incredulous by PhoenixR
Really, did I just waste 2 hours on this? The cheap tricks to make people jump didn't even phase me, I saw every one coming the setup was so telegraphed. On top of the cheap parlor tricks, the acting was unbearable, I wasn't sure if it was the script or the lack of chops of the actors, but regardless, it was horrible. The plot was weak at best, and the people combing through an old hospital made me laugh out loud.
If you have time to waste, do it, but I warned you.
The sequel by zemihuynh
I'm a big horror movies fanatic, and I must say that this was one of the best sequels I've seen. I'd go see it, again and again, any day. So go! :)
Not what I expected by pamelabrown013
Insidious 2 was overall not a bad movie, but it took a minute to figure out what was going on in the movie. At times, it left you confused. Not as jumpy scary as the first one, and sort of took a corny twist near the end. I would still recommend it, but just don't be expecting a nail biter.
Horrible! by thanos2167
This movie was AWFUL! I gave up a free movie ticket to see this pile of garbage?? I was so hyped-up about this film and after it was over, I was COMPLETELY disappointed! It was NO where near as scary or creepy as the first one, and the main evil character was a joke! SAVE YOUR MONEY!! Wait for DVD!!
looking forward to chapter 3 by lightman07
I love the way it built upon the first one. Additionally, it is open to have more chapters and I would love to see how it plays out.
Chair grabbing thriller! by josmack
Inisidous Chapter 2 is a chair grabbing thriller that kept me jumping and kicking out of my seat. The movie is a must see for the fear seekers, but viewers beware you want to park the car close to the movie entrance. Long walks are not advised the fear will be in you!
