A good, old-fashioned ghost story by Zippy_the_Pinhead
A word of warning: this movie is not for the "Saw," "Hostel," or "Final Destination" crowds. This movie moves at a glacier's pace, but it is all in the interest of establishing character and it is in this particular area that The Innkeepers succeeds. Horror movies only work when the viewer becomes invested in the film's characters and you can only become invested in someone by spending some time with them. All three of the main performances are good enough to convince us that these people are real and familiar. They act like real people in an albeit unusual situation.
Without giving anything away, I can say that the haunting did not scare me in the way I wanted to be scared. However, three days after seeing the movie I cannot get the ghosts out of my head. And the more I think about them, the more scary they become.
The mark of a good film is that it keeps you entertained while it unfolds, but it also provides you with something to think about after you've left the theater.
