By far the best Judd Apatow comedy that Judd Apatow had nothing at all to do with.

Could have taken a more relevant, insightful and even funnier cut at a very rich topic. But the filmmakers didn't; they went with dog poo instead.

A Judd Apatow clone that's one of the few recent R-rated raunch fests the ubiquitous auteur of larky crudeness actually had nothing to do with, I Love You, Man cranks out the kind of lowball humor that makes you gag on your own laughs.

There are ribald jokes and gross-out episodes, but the movie works because everything hinges on the camaraderie and undeniable chemistry between Rudd and Segel.

It's a rare comedy that actually grows funnier on reflection. It benefits enormously from the talents of the two stars.

Above all, just plain funny. It's funny with some dumb physical humor, yes, and some gross-out jokes apparently necessary to all buddy movies, but also funny in observations, dialogue, physical behavior and Sydney Fife's observations as a people-watcher.

Iffy for 16+

Male bonding comedy is very crude -- but good-hearted.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this hard-R "bromantic" comedy starring Judd Apatow regulars Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, is loaded with strong language ("f--k" is just the beginning), graphic discussions about sex, heavy drinking, and generally shameless bathroom humor. At the same time, it does portray relationships between men and between couples in a more realistic light than many other movies -- focusing on the need for respect and communication -- and ultimately has its heart in the right place.

  • Familes can talk about whether the movie's message comes across amid the crude humor. Does the film's reliance on strong language and sex jokes undermine its themes and positive messages, or does it make those messages more likely to be seen by a broad audience?
  • Discuss the real question of male friendship. Do men,in general, lack the emotional vocabulary to form new friendships aftera certain age? And what emotional needs does male friendship meet?

The good stuff
  • message true2

Messages: Though the main characters behave in notably immature ways and there are plenty of suggestive/crude jokes, the movie also has positive messages about friendship, communication, and respect. A positively portrayed gay character uses language like "Dad's down with the gays" and "Dad's with the homos."

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Characters are not meant to be role models. Although the characters grow up a bit and learn some lessons, there's no one you would want your kid to emulate.

What to watch for
  • violence false1

Violence: Some scuffling for comedic purposes; a "sleeper hold" is applied. Comedic golfing injuries.

  • sex false4

Sex: Extensive, crude, blunt discussion of sex, sexual practices (including oral sex, masturbation, and pornography), techniques, and more. A character talks about watching a video of a grandmother using a sexual aide; viewers don't see the footage but do hear about it at great length, in graphic language. In between the vulgar jokes, there's also some rational discussion of how couples communicate about sex, as well as some discussion of homosexuality and bisexuality.

  • language false5

Language: Extensive/frequent swearing and strong language, including "f--k," "f---ed," "goddamn," "dicks," "whore," "slut," "hell," "suck it," "b--w jobs," "suck," "balls," "crap," "oh my God," "buttocks," and many more.

  • consumerism false4

Consumerism: Plenty of obvious product placement, including iPhones, Heineken beer, and Equinox Gyms. Other featured brands include HBO, Century 21 realty, Time magazine, Bennigans, Legoland, AMC, Pepperidge Farm, the L.A. Galaxy soccer team, and more. Also lots of mentions of TV shows and movies like Saturday Night Live, Chocolat, The Devil Wears Prada, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, Runaway Bride, Lost, The Incredible Hulk, and more. The band Rush is featured prominently.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false4

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Characters drink champagne, wine, beer, and hard liquor to excess and smoke cigargettes. Beer is drunk as part of a competitive game, with dire consequences. Marijuana smoking paraphernalia is seen.

OMG! by Noeun
I can't believe I said OMG, but this movie was freakin hilarious! I was actually laughing out loud in the movie theater and I don't ever do that. The main actors are hilarious and did a good job at acting. Must see!

Loved The Movie, Man! by snackbar
Based on the fart-humor previews and the goofy sounding plot, I wasn't expecting much from this guy-bonding premised movie, but was actually quite surprised. Situations and dialogue were well-written, great casting and ensemble acting made the characters believeable, and there were many, many funny lines, situations and gags.

I Love You, Man review by Jimmyg810
Although I expected a movie full of explicit jokes and extreme nudity, just like every other movie involving these certain actors, I was actually impressed by the storyline and the relationship developed between Paul Rudd's and Jason Segel's character. The movie has an equal balance of comedic gold and human emotion. Compared to other film's of this caliber, it is NOT your typical stoner movie, yet still good enough to be put in the category of it's brother/sister films.

HA! by drumlinechic06
I saw this in a bad mood and almost died laughing. Absolutely high-lar-e-us. It was great. I recommend you see it with a group of people, the more the funnier. It was so funny I couldn't say in my seat most of the time. Just don't take your mother to see this unless she like these kind of movies.

I love you, Man...I love this, movie! by chriscampagno
I love you, man is a well created comedy. It is a fun movie for any occasion. You could go with friends, take a date, or just go by yourself. No matter who you go with you are going to laugh. There is a great on screen chemistry between the two characters that makes this movie a must see if you like comedies!

It was hilarious by khema1808
Right from the start to the end, it was hilarious. It was surprising that I enjoyed this movie, as me and my friend, we were waiting to get tix for Fast and the furious but they were sold out. So we decided to go for this movie (thinking it will be lame) and sat with pouted lips.. then came the movie which kept us entertained all the while and it was the buck paid.

Perfect comedy... by larsprop
I really think this movie is the best I've seen in quite some time. I laughed all through the movie, and even now, 3-4 days later, I remember scenes from the movie and starts laughing again... Paul Rudd is fantastic, and his character really reminds me of my brother-in-law... Go see it, you won't regret it!

A++ Bro-Mance!! by magicwan83
I was laughing the entire movie. I have been a fan of Jason Segel since Freaks and Geeks and his delivers, as always. As for Paul Rudd, there are no words. He has definitely come in to his own these past few years. He was the best part of the movie. Honestly, there were no bad parts. You will definitely be please with this movie.
