This is the kind of movie that was doomed on the page, both by an inherently problematic premise and ill-conceived character motivations.

I am just about ready to write off movies in which people make bets about whether they will, or will not, fall in love.

A concept, no matter how promising, is not a movie, and this picture has the bad luck to illustrate the difference.

The movie isn't all bad, and it's sure to succeed with its target audience.

How to lose an audience in 10 minutes: Cobble together a predictable and forced romantic comedy that should have been funnier.

With its ungainly double-deception premise, How to Lose a Guy feels like it was made out of two connect-the-dots drawings laid haphazardly on top of one another.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 14+

Battle of the sexes romcom with mature content.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this movie has very mature material for a PG-13, including explicit and graphic sexual references and situations. There are references to impotence, orgasms, sex between people who do not know each other very well, and the appropriate name to give to genitals. Characters drink and smoke. Drinking to the point of drunkenness is portrayed as a way to handle unhappiness. There is also very strong language for a PG-13, including continuous use through one long scene of the word "bulls--t" in a card game. Most important, this is a movie in which the characters lie to each other and manipulate each other and make no effort to tell each other the truth, even after they have become very close.

  • Families can talk about how men and women may have different communication styles. And they should talk about bets that may hurt someone's feelings. What negative male and female stereotypes did you see here?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Deceptive behavior, and numerous negative female and male stereotypes -- meant for laughs but will be offensive to many.

What to watch for
  • violence false0

Violence: One punch in the face.

  • sex false3

Sex: Plenty of sex talk and sexual behavior. The couple follow each other into the shower for implied sex, kiss passionately, visit a couples/sex therapist, and talk about the name of his penis. Plenty of sexualized magazine headlines shown and near-naked women posing in sportswear.

  • language false3

Language: Many instances of "s--t" especially, plus "pisser," "ass," "freaking," and more. They play the card game named "Bulls--t."

  • consumerism false3

    Consumerism: Not an issue

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Drinking and smoking, drunkenness; lots of drinking references.

A Really Great Movie!
My mom and I were searching for a new movie to watch, and this came on the Bravo network, and we figured what the Hell, and sat down with some brownies to watch it. This was a GREAT movie. It was your typical romantic-comedy, but it had an original plot, and strong acting that accentuated the parts that were sensual, and the parts that were funny. I could watch this movie over and over again, I will NEVER understand why it didn't do well in the theatres. This is a fabulous movie! :)
