The New York Times Dana Stevens

Endure the long, slow, unraveling of this movie, which can't even muster the intelligence to be pretentious or the bravado to be amusingly bad.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Despite a wealth of special effects...this movie is surprisingly inert, more dull than anything else, with little to recommend it on any level.

Ultimately the title is most revealing. It's hollow, man.

Hollow Man can think of nothing more interesting to do than spy on his girlfriend and assault his neighbor.Too bad. Really too bad, because the movie is supported by some of the most intriguing special effects I've seen.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

not for kids

Even for mature viewers, this is a flop.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that even if they customarily take their teens to R-rated movies, they should think twice about letting kids see this one -- strong, pervasive scenes of violence, gruesome horror, and adult sexuality make this inappropriate for all but the most mature viewers.

  • Families can talk about how the film's themes compare to the current issues being raised about pharmaceutical drug companies.

The good stuff
  • message true0

    Messages: A graphic dirty joke.

What to watch for
  • violence false5

Violence: Constant violence, including a half dozen gruesome murders, a rape, and two scenes in which animals are brutally killed. The gratuitous killings of two lab animals are particularly upsetting.

  • sex false5

Sex: The main character uses his invisibility to grope a sleeping co-worker's breast, spy on another in the bathroom, and rape a neighbor who has been undressing in front of his window. There are several sex scenes, and a dirty joke is told. We see both male and female nudity.

  • language false5

Language: Heavy. Pretty much every word you wouldn't want kids to repeat is used several times.

  • consumerism false0

    Consumerism: Not an issue

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Brief smoking and drinking.
