Gloria is a work of maturity, depth and emotional insight. There’s not a single false note here.

With someone else in the central role, Gloria might have been cloyingly sentimental or downright maudlin. With Ms. García on hand, it's a mostly convincing celebration of unquenchable energy.

Both actors still manage to show something we rarely see on screen: the heartache and happiness that come with love late in life.

It is to Lelio’s credit that he steers clear of stereotypes and lets the story unfold organically without judgment or sentimentality. There is an unflinching honesty and intelligence here.

The previews were totally deceiving with the clips shown out of order. So, one is lead to believe that she dumps the nit-wit early and then finds great joy in life. The movie is quite the opposite and is slow and painful to watch. Gloria has an infectuous smile but watching middle aged/old people have sex ....repeatedly....was too much. There were several totally unexplained and unnecessary sub-plots which just made a painful movie longer.

Lulled into this movie by a few good reviews by critics and its having won awards, I have to say it was hard not to leave before it finished. It has to be one of the most boring movies I've seen in recent memory. Gloria is a nitwit; Rodolfo is a twit. She gets upset with him for disappearing from a family get-together where she ignores him completely. No wonder he decamped. His other abandonments are silly. She should find something a little more inspiring in her life than haunting singles bars. A lot of us have and do.

The story was rather slow in developing. I kept thinking "Get on with it". Gloria was rather passive and somewhat unwilling to confront her issues. The sex scenes were unnecessary. The Rudolfo character was not very good either. I expected more Latin fiery dialogue from someone.

Painful to sit through by edballer138
The ridiculousness of this movie baffled me and my girlfriend beyond belief. We went into the movie expecting something so much more than what we got. It was depressing, frustrating, and extremely over exaggerated at times. I felt like I was watching the slowest train wreck in the history of the world. Many scenes were left grossly unexplained and the main character's love interest was one of the most unlikeable characters in cinema history. It does give a somewhat realistic view of life and love in your 50's, however it was dully displayed. I do not recommend this movie to anyone.
