not for kids
Ultra-violent sci-fi action film aims to shock and offend.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this mediocre action movie is full of frenetic violence, quick-cut nudity and sexual material, strong language (including lots of uses of "f--k"), and plenty of gore (shootings, stabbings, and more). There's also a general feeling that, just as in their prior Crank and Crank: High Voltage, the filmmakers seem to get great pleasure from trying to offend audiences with this kind of nonstop sexual material, nudity, and violence.
- Families can talk about some of the tricky questions that often surround video gaming: Is the high-tech simulation of violence a way to blow off steam or a dangerously desensitizing process?
- Why do so many people respond so strongly to the idea of living a second, different life through computer technology?
The good stuff
-
Messages: Even though the movie asks its audience to think about the nature of violent entertainment, it's presenting violence as entertainment. Several characters have moral awakenings, but the overall message is negative.
-
Role models: There's no one here you would want kids to emulate. Despite the fact that the main character is a decent man pushed to extreme actions in the pursuit of justice and revenge, most of the characters are poor role models.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Constant brutal violence, including shootings, stabbings, beatings, and more. Body parts and heads are obliterated by shells and explosions, with the camera lingering on the effects. Bloody wounds drip; other gore is visible. A knife is held to a child's throat.
-
Sex: Naked breasts and buttocks, crude situations, implied masturbation. Sexualized nicknames (for example, "Rick Rape") are used to identify online personas.
-
Language: Constant strong language, including many uses of "f--k," "c--t," "s--t," "ass," "p---y," "c--k," "hell," "damn," "goddamn," :oh my God," and much more.
-
Consumerism: Some real-world brands mentioned or visible, including Mountain Dew.
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Some smoking; characters also drink lots of alcohol.

Worst Movie I Have Seen In My Lifetime by European MovieFan
I have seen hundreds of movies past 4 decades .This movie was the worst !!!!. I left the movie theater after watching this movie only 10 minutes, and I was not the only one.. It looks that the movie industry is totally underestimating the intelligence of the audience. Money totally wasted . I was not entertained , I was tortured.

wish it took it to the next level by meccassault
this movie had a lot of potential but wasn't everything it could've been....it was definitely worth seeing and in theaters too..
Strong points:
Lead Role
Gerard Butler was made to do action flicks... 300 was evidence enough, and gamer just reinforces it... He is a bad mofo. And to those that said they all had fake airbrushed physiques... well i doubt they did that in gamer and homeboy was still in top notch shape. I hope he continues action roles..
Storyline
Although often compared to and somewhat similar to death race it also had its own twist...honestly the only thing that was similar was the fight to be set free that is it...how it was gone about and played throughout was a lot different.
Weak Points
Lead Role
Butler shouldve been challenged more with more action fighting sequences, but the once that were there are awesome...not his fault. Also had some cheezy parts that kept it from being as serious as it couldve been... I think its worth seeing though overall.

Wow, simply amazing. by Privyet
You people don't get it, do you? This was a great movie!
"But kids see it!" DON'T F**KING TAKE THEM. It's rated R for a reason, and they say there is some nudity for a reason.
In any case, this was a great movie. It had a very deep storyline, and the special effects are great. Gerard Butler did a great job at portraying a bad*** ***-kicker, and did great at showing loneliness and desperation to return to his family.
As for Michael C. Hall? Truly amazing. The star of Dexter returns early this year as a slightly-southern, multi-billion dollar, innovating entrepreneur. His whimsical nature in Gamer is vastly different from his withdrawn, quiet nature in Dexter.
Were there boobs? Yes, but they told you that beforehand, didn't they?
Was there blood? Hell yes!
Was there a story? A very good one, too.
Should you see this movie? Of course.

The Gamer overall is an okay movie. I do think that they should've added more to the final script like... oh i don't know... AN ENDING. But from the very start there's action and blood, which I have to admit are pretty good becuase it's not like the Quentin Tarantino movies where at least 5 gallons of blood are comming out of one person's head. but if you don't like a lot of blood and a little bit of guts then this would not be the movie for you. also if you are looking for a movie with a storyline or a plot then you shouldn't go either. I have to say that this movie is rated R for a reason. there is quite a bit of profanity (lots of F bombs especially in the beginning) i would say also a DUMPTRUCK of nudity and sexual activity so parents, DO NOT let your 15 and under kids see this movie. but as i said before it's an okay movie in my opinion i think people should wait to go see it until it comes out on pay per view. not on DVD, PAY PER VIEW.

Gamer by keyjon
I went to see Gamer last night. Like many others, I was drawn in, from the trailer, by the action, the idea of the evolution of gaming, and the societal commentary on the future of our entertainment. I'm not sure what movie the other reviewers saw, however these notions, as well as many other thought provoking ideas about the future were raised.
By no means was the movie perfect, however it's certainly heady, action packed, and entertaining. In my humble opinion, I feel that the commentary on our numbness to violence, and the deconstruction of intimacy to mere primal levels was lost on many reviewers. "Senseless violence and exploitation of woman?" This movie is not using it as a seat filler, it's displaying in a creative way, where our current path might lead, if we're not careful. I say give it a shot, and as Quato from Total Recall so eloquently said, "open your mind."
Peace,
Jon

Possible Future? by samdiaz
Gamer is a non-stop action movie that explores human's power to inflict pain on others for their own entertainment. Many times I found myself thinking "this would be sooo cool!" but then immediately doubting if I could bring myself to do that to another human being. The action sequences are very big and very realistic, with Butler playing a very convincing role as a man who just wants to get out of it all. Overall, it's a good movie with just the right amount of blood and gore to give it that extra "oomph".

Plot holes you could drive a truck through by loy78
The premise is of Gamer is that in the not-too-distant future gamers will be able to control other human beings (through nano-technology) in the game "Slayers" where death-row inmates are given a chance at freedom if they can survive the game as rich teenagers pay to "play them." While the movie seems to abhor the game violence in a general sense, it doesn't stint on the gore and fighting. In fact, the whole plot seems to be an excuse to shoot, slash, mutilate and bomb. I don't think Saving Private Ryan had this much blood. There is some side story about the main character Kable/Tillman and his wife and child on the "outside" but the directors didn't care enough to really invest much effort into that part of the story. They especially don't care about the child (who only gets one line in the movie). The end result is a movie filled with violence and blood, with a half-hearted story line. If you are in the mood for a lot of action and not much thought, Gamer is the movie for you.
