It's a wingless exercise, despite a rather heartening attitude toward space travel that will introduce young auds to the glory that was NASA in the '60s.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

OK for kids 4+

Not even very young kids will be over the moon.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this animated 3D film only has a couple of mildly perilous scenes -- when Russian flies (one with a menacing eye patch) attack American flies, and when flies are stuck in a sample jar. The language is restricted to mild insults like "stupid" and the oft-repeated "idiot," and there are a few scenes of flies flirting and hugging. Because the film is set in 1969, there are references to the Cold War, with the Russians set up as the clear nemeses of the American astronauts/flies. Young children might be confused about the entire Moscow-set section, since most kids don't understand the political atmosphere of the 1960s.

  • Families can talk about how the small flies made a big difference. Parents, if your kids are interested/need plot clarification, explain the history of the space program and explain the central role of the long-standing competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Ask kids how they think things have changed since the '60s. Is space exploration as big a deal as it was back then? Why or why not?

The good stuff
  • message true2

Messages: The three young flies use teamwork to save the space mission. Mrs. McFly learns that even though it's risky, following your dreams is important. Two young flies constantly implore their friend to go on a diet. The Russian flies are portrayed as stereotypical Cold War Communists.

What to watch for
  • violence false1

Violence and scariness: Russian flies fight American flies, but it's not very intense.

  • sex false1

Sexy stuff: Grandpa flirts with his old love, Nadia. The local TV station's call letters are D-CUP.

  • language false1

Language: Mild insults, including "idiot," "stupid," and "butts."

  • consumerism false1

    Consumerism: Motorola shows up.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false1

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Flies have to fly around the ashes of an ashtray.

Great family time. by arybal
I brought my 2 year old daughterto this movie the other day. She doesn't like to sit still very long, but she loved this movie! She sat down the whole time completely into the movie. Great story, the 3D was very fun. They would fly out right by you, it was very cool to see all the different thngs coming out of the screen.

Fascinating 3-D effects by Gramtastic
The four children (ages 4-8) that I took to see the movie were thoroughly entertained for the entire time by the effects. Yeah, the plot was a little fragmented, no great moral dilemmas or surprise endings, but it was fine for children. A bonus was the educational value - the plot revolved around the first astronauts to land on the moon, and brought out a lot of questions regarding the space program and the lunar landing.

Fly me to the moon, in 3D by Jadeth
Okay guys. Quick answer. If you're looking for a movie experience where things just don't stop jumping out at the screen.....NOT the movie I'd recommend. If you want something cute and safe for kids with an edge of novelty, yeah, see it. Basically, the plot was fine, but the 3D wasn't as good as I was hoping for. It was cute, however, and had some funny moments. All in all (So-So) was my rating. Could have done better. Could have done worse. They kept it clean, which is always a plus for me.

Fantastic Histroy Lesson or my kids. It was like we were a "fly on the wall" when the Apollo went to the moon.

Rated G with mild violence and fighting by bteeters
Pretty good movie. Saw it in IMAX 3-D. Both my 4 1/2 year old and our 1 1/2 year old, sat through the entire movie. Only problem is, nbear the end is a fight scene. Why do you have to put a fight scene in a G rated movie? Even the baby maggots were fighting. Very strange. Other than that it was pretty good. It's not CARS or MONSTERS INC, but worth checking out.

NA by JUDITHPENA
I went with my daughter she's 2 yrs and seven months. I'm still trying to get her use sitting through a whole movie so, I did not see the whole thing. What I did see was interesting but, I'm not really into the whole 3D exprerience.

Great 3-D effects. Movie just so-so by Stevewampler
I thought the 3-D effects were terrific, but the movies itself was just ok. Still worth it for my 6 and 8 year olds.

Fly Me to the Moon by stella88
This is a Must-See! It's one of the cutest movies we've seen in a long time! From the moment I laid eyes on those adorable 3D fly-lets I wanted some of my very own to take home! The 3D is absolutely awesome from start to finish!!! And the camera's perspective, often times just picking up and buzzing around like a "fly," adds to the fun of this film. The story line is decent. The humor isn't stupid or crude. And there are clever bits such as Mom Fly raising her newborn bundles of joy: itty, bitty maggots. They're even cute! The two things that are a bit problematic: the physical appearance of the humans. They're hideous-looking, android like things. Not quite sure what happened there. And the colors (which don't seem to cover the full spectrum) seem muted and hazy. Perhaps, this has something to do with creating 3D--don't know, not a film dudette. In any case, its few problems don't outweigh this gem. It's an easy purchase on DVD.
