A series that's provided a successful, moderately enjoyable ride up to now blows its tires, gasket and transmission on its way to flaming out in Fast & Furious.

I admire the craft involved, but the movie leaves me profoundly indifferent. After three earlier movies in the series, which have been transmuted into video games, why do we need a fourth one? Oh. I just answered my own question.

Fast & Furious is, in a very bizarre way, a thing of gasp-inducing artistry to watch, even if you're not a member of the NASCAR, gear-head, street-racing crowd.

Fast & Furious is the first film since the original to be smart about how far to stretch logic without sacrificing the desired macho swagger and revved-up emotions.

It offers an attractive getaway route from self-importance, snark, and chatty comedies about male bonding. Here, stick shifts do the talking.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 14+

Better than the last two, but still pretty mindless action.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this action-packed fourth installment in the Fast and Furious series was heavily marketed to teens. There's plenty of violence, including explosions, shoot outs, fistfights, and lots of car chases -- which end in at least a few deaths (though most are implied rather than shown directly). There are only two love scenes (and the camera cuts before the act itself), but there's plenty of other risque stuff, including several shots of half-dressed women kissing each other and dancing provocatively. Language includes frequent use of words like "s--t," "bitch," and "p---y," as well as Spanish curse words. Characters drink and smoke, and drugs/the drug trade plays a central role in the plot.

  • Families can talk about the the fact that, except for two or three women, most of the movie's femalecharacters are sexy decoration. What kind of message does that send to girls? Do you think the filmmakers care, or are they going after an entirely different audience?
  • What do you think of the idea that some people live by a "code"and others don't? Does following your own set of rules mean that it'sOK to do illegal or other iffy things if you think you have a goodreason? Which characters in the movie have a code, and which don't?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Although they engage in ongoing illegal activity and plenty of other iffy behavior, Dom and his loved ones are tight-knit and occasionally do the right thing. The government, particularly the FBI, is depicted as ineffective and caring more about how they're perceived than about stopping crime.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Dom is a vigilante motivated by vengeance and grief -- but he helps bring a criminal to justice. On the positive side, the two female supporting characters are strong, and the cast is impressively culturally diverse.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Explosions, gun fights, bloody fistfights, fatal car chases, and a few disturbing deaths -- someone is purposely mowed down by a car, and someone else is murdered execution style.

  • sex false3

Sex: Although there's no nudity, bikini-clad women are shown throughout the film, and in several scenes half-dressed women are shown kissing each other. A man sucks on a woman's toes and encourages women to make out with each other. Two couples kiss passionately.

  • language false3

Language: Frequently used language includes "s--t," "p---y," "ass," "bulls---t," "goddamn," "bitch," one use of "f--k," and Spanish curse words like cojones and chinga.

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: Automobile companies are well represented: Honda, Ford, Porsche, Nissan, Plymouth, and more. Also Corona beer and Castrol Motor Oil.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Characters drink cocktails, beer, and shots of hard liquor at several parties. Drugs are mentioned, offered, and shown wrapped up for delivery but never used. The Los Angeles-Mexican drug trade is a central plot point of the film. A few characters smoke cigarettes.

It really wasn't as corny as I expected. by Kyle_Adkins
I'm sure we all remember the original "Fast and the Furious", and how corny Vin Diesel's lines were.. "It doesn't matter if you win by a inch or a mile..", "I live my life a quarter mile at a time..", ect.. Well, Surprise, Vin doesn't do that in this movie. So, we eliminate the corny stuff, add a decent plot line (Albeit it's got a few holes, but screw it right? We're here to see cars go fast.), and some really good special effects. Ta-Da! The new fast and the furious is born. All in all, I was fairly entertained by this movie. Definitely a step up from the two terrible sequels they previously made. I'd recommend this movie for all racers/ricers/what have you, But probably not so for people who have little to no interest in cars. The story line won't keep you entertained long enough to merit the 9$ you spent on the ticket. All in all, 4/5. Check it out, you just might enjoy yourself a little.

Why add a review to something with 1,200 reviews already? by N_odie
Well, it was that good. This movie was a last minute thing. I ran to the theature for an 8 pm showing and was told the tickets where sold out. So I went inside to the fandango booth and bought my tickets. GF Sorry about the off topic intro. I sat front row, so the movie was an awful lot to absorb. Having an original cast and some from the other movies was fantastic. You really feel the emotions and get the feelings of the actors. They connected the story beautifully with the 2 main characters. I loved the girls and the action. Not to mention a fantastic story line. If you have kids? If suggestive dress isn't an issue the rush of the races and close driving will be a thrill. Overall, I rate this a MUST GO!!!! Nic

Action Packed- by Deebie1975
Glad to see Vin Diesel in this one!!! This movie was action packed from the very beginning. If you like cars, racing, fights, and action...go see. I went to the midnight showing and was not disappointed-the only disappointment was pulling out of the theater and seeing the youngsters acting like they were all Vin Diesel....so, go to an early showing if you want to avoid stupidity....and don't try the stunts at home :)

Fast and Furious is GREAT! by M-A-Z-E
If you've watched the franchise and have realized that the third installment was probably the worst movie in a long time, and that the first movie was the best, think again! Fast and Furious is BY FAR the BEST in the franchise. The story is well planned out and executed and the cast is just as good! GO watch it!

AWESOME! by asianchik714
guys will love the cars and girls in bakinis making out with each other. girls will love the sadness and love in the movie. both will love the action. but if you sat up close like i did, you might get a headache from the camera moving wildly during shots. ( for example: cloverfield ) but it wasn't as bad as that. OMG I CRIED WHEN. . . yeah. thers a couple sad parts in it. but overwell it was AWESOME!! good plot nice references from the first movie and funny jokes.

Storyline.... by ricamarie
It had a really good story line to it. It completed the all the Fast & Furious movie and tied the first & T. Drfit together. [the 2nd was the worst one, I wish they never made it. That was just about rappers. And I didn't care.] This movie was really the second one, and T.Drift was the 3rd one (Han's spin off). It didn't have as much cars as T.drift, but the storyline was there. T.drift was lacking a little on the storyline. But over all it was good, you should definately see the movie. :D

Fast and Furious by genacopen
My husband and I really enjoyed the movie. We really appreciated the fact that there was not alot a curse words used and the sexual behaviors were not explict. I would be comfortable taking my 6 year old nephew to the movie. The plot was well written and the actors did a good job. This fast and furious was almost better than the orginal.
