This is movie-making by and for dummies, a sappy little bible story, blissed out on its own ineptitude.

    It's an almighty, humorless bore.

A movie far less interesting than its premise. It is also slightly less interesting than its hugely popular predecessor, "Bruce Almighty."

It's mildly diverting for kids and families in a way that would be perfectly fine as an ABC Family cable project.

Carell is lovable as God's unwilling disciple. But the comedy is less than divine.

Carell is getting quite good as these everyman characters but lacks the audacity of, say, a Carrey or a Robin Williams. He is making comedy out of dullness.

The message is so good-hearted, so inarguable, so dull.

OK for kids 8+

Carell's morality tale much milder than Carrey's.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this sequel to Bruce Almighty is a broader, milder comedy than the original, and it aims to appeal to the whole family (and given the frequent TV ads, chances are even young kids have heard of it). The good news is that even though it's not particularly good, it is pretty safe -- there's no violence, drinking, or sex, and virtually no bad language ("pissed" and "jackass" are as strong as it gets). It's worth noting that the plot revolves around Evan talking directly to God and then obeying his command; there are several biblical references, but no proselytizing.

  • Families can talk about how this movie is being marketed. Is it aimed at Steve Carell's fans, people who liked Bruce Almighty, or both? How do the ads make it seem appealing? Also, how is it different from Bruce? Why do you think the filmmakers decided to make the comedy milder this time around? And who's funnier -- Carell or Jim Carrey? Families can also discuss the message about committing acts of random kindness. What would you have done in Evan's place?

The good stuff
  • message true3

Messages: Evan sacrifices his reputation in order to follow a greater calling and by doing so saves lives, animals, and his family. Some poop/bodily function jokes (not surprising, given all the animals involved).

What to watch for
  • violence false0

Violence and scariness: The "flood" scene is a bit intense as the water rises and the ark is propelled forward, but no one gets hurt. Some comic pratfalls/injuries while building the ark.

  • sex false0

Sexy stuff: Evan and Joan kiss and hug a couple of times.

  • language false0

Language: Very little, even by PG standards: "pissed," "jackass," "Oh my God!"

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: Just a few: Hummer, The Daily Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Mary).

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false0

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Not an issue

VERY ENJOYABLE by rogertempleton
I look forward to seeing it again with other members of my family. Very enjoyable movie with a positve message, positive religious overtones and loaded with comedy that actually made me laugh out loud a few times.

I went to a premier and this is one good movie! Acting was a little "over" and alot of slap stick humor, but the whole theater was roaring. I new 4 other people who went that really liked it and no one at the premier that I talked to didn't like it.

Great, really funny, and doesn't make fun of the Christian faith like we were afraid it might. A great family film, or just for adults also.

Good Family Movie!!! by tina_i
I took my 2 sons to see this and we all liked it a lot. My sons are 9 & 11 years old. I had read some bad reviews on the Yahoo site, and decided to take them anyway. I think it's a great movie to take your kids to. I wouldn't recommend it to two adults who are heading out on a date, perhaps... as it wouldn't appeal to all. But, for a kids movie / family movie... it was a really good movie. It had comic entertainment, combined with some nice meaning and messages within the story line. And, lots of good upbeat music, with a great ending that makes you want to get up and dance :)

Great for all ages by kids movie fan
Three generations went from our family and they were all laughing and enjoying themselves. We think it is a must see for all.

Better than Bruce Almighty by Sunny1129
Watching this movie made my weekend. The writers seemed to be very knowledgable about biblical references, and that is a rarity these days. The movie doesn't slam christianity, but I don't think that it makes viewers who aren't of any religion uncomfortable either. It was a feel good movie and the cast did an incredible job. This would be good for people of all ages!
