Watching Eternal Sunshine, you don't just watch a love story -- you fall in love with what love really is.

    The Hollywood Reporter Kirk Honeycutt

Not only (Kaufman's) most accessible and romantic screenplay, it's his most complete. The third act works like a charm and pulls all his themes, characters and conflicts together beautifully.

This angular and intelligent romantic comedy isn't entirely consistent. Even as you laugh, it's a movie you admire more than love.

Despite jumping through the deliberately disorienting hoops of its story, Eternal Sunshine has an emotional center, and that's what makes it work.

It is by turns comic, dark and surprisingly tender. If one must reduce it to simple description, call it a love story with a twist. Or a twisted love story.

    Variety Todd McCarthy

If films about coping with memory loss and/or reverse-order storytelling now constitute a mini-genre, then Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is arguably the best of the lot.

A memory play and a sleight of hand, Eternal Sunshine is more than anything else deeply sincere. Like Spike Jonze, who directed "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovich," Gondry succeeds principally by balancing Kaufman's churning skepticism with unflinching hope.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 17+

Imaginative, loopy romance is for adults only.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this movie has extremely strong language and very explicit sexual references and situations. Characters drink and smoke cigarettes and marijuana.

  • Families can talk about which memories they might think about erasing and which ones they will always make sure to keep. They might also like to look up the meaning of the word "Lacuna," talk about some of their favorite quotations and read some of the brilliant poetry of Alexander Pope.

The Sun Doesn't Go Down, It's Just an Illusion Caused by the World Spinning 'Round by Reesuh
Jim Carrey has never taken on a serious role so magnificently before now. Joel is a shy man who discovers that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has erased him from her memory. Furiated at her rash decision, Joel decides to do the same and erase her from his memory. As the (spectacularly primitive) procedure continues, Joel realizes that he doesn't want to lose the memory of his former flame. it'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, and it'll make you cherish all of the good and bad memories. Long story short, this film is perfect.
