not for kids
Irreverent romcom about porn is insightful but very graphic.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Don Jon is about a guy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who's addicted to porn, which means it has lots of montages from X-rated movies. No genitalia are shown, but you'll see plenty of naked breasts, graphic sex scenes (with genitals obscured), moaning, groaning, people in all sorts of positions, and implied masturbation. There's tons of swearing/crude language, too (including "f--k" and "s--t"), and one scene in which a character smokes weed. All of that said, mature viewers can still learn something from the movie, including that pornography can shape the way people/society views women and of sex -- and that it can get in the way of true intimacy.
- Families can talk about how Don Jon depicts sex and relationships. What connection do sex and intimacy have in the movie? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values on these topics.
- What makes Jon's habits an addiction? How does it get in his way? How does it compare to other kinds of addiction?
- Talk about pornography's appeal -- and reach. Does the film capture the casualness with which people view porn? What do you think of this stance?
The good stuff
Messages: It's never too late to start over, to figure yourself out, or to recover from the horrors of life (or our mind-numbing, soul-crushing proclivities). Also, pay attention to how you're being treated; what seems like love may just be selfishness.
Role models: Jon is a brawny, crass guy with a major problem objectifying women. (The same goes for his friends.) But he's seeking higher ground, and we admire him for it. Esther is open-minded and honest.
What to watch for
Violence: A man punches the window of a car in rage, smashing it to bits and hurting his hand. He's also an angry driver who cusses out anyone who gets in his way.
Sex: Tons of sex throughout the movie, in all sorts of positions; although viewers don't actually see genitalia, they see everything else, especially in many clips from actual porn videos. One character masturbates many times a day; again, viewers don't see his penis, but it's clear what he's doing.
Language: Very frequent strong language includes a ton of uses of "f--k," plus "a--hole," "s--t," "bitch," "p---y," "c--k," "t-ts," "ass," "damn," "hell," "oh my God," "goddamn," and more. Also, a slur word is used once.
Consumerism: Camaro, iPhones, Martinelli's, Coke, Diet Coke, TiVo, Budweiser, and more are shown/mentioned.
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Some drinking, mostly in bars, dance clubs, and restaurants. A woman lights up a joint after sex.

Joseph Gordon Levitt directs this mini masterpiece. by simey06
Don Jon was an unique cinematic treat. Joseph Gordon Levitt directs this gem with excellent execution and skill. He was also hilarious, and out of the box yet still incredibly relatable. Any time he is on screen with any of the supporting characters you just cannot look away. The scenes with Scarlett Johanson are magical though, the accents alone keep you entranced in the hilarity and contrast from their normal on screen personalities. Julianne Moore is pitch perfect as well as the dark horse main character. All in all a great albeit highly erotic movie.
Every couple needs to see this movie by jda7165
Don Jon is much more than what the trailers make it seem. Its not just another celebrities banging and it has a twist you won't see coming.
Very funny overall and a lot of stuff brought up in the movie any couple can relate to.
Don Jon by movie going granny
Save your $$ and stay home and ********** on line ..... that is 50% of this film!! No awards in the wings here for sure!!! As close to porn as you can get! Stay home is the best advice I can offer for this film.
I attend movies at least 3x a month and some are great and some are good, but this was downright awful.

This is a brash movie with a subtle message, one definitely worth making. All the actors, in particular Scarlett Johansson, did a terrific job. Very impressed all around.

The buzz word for Don Jon is in the title of the review. Any guy ages 18-25 ish can completely relate to this movie, especially those of us privileged enough to have that crazy ex. The movie centers around the theme of meaningless sex, which is immensely prevalent in society. I loved the relations it made to real life. Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a great job as a writer, taking witty stabs at family life, religion, relationships and routine living. The message that "Don Jon" discovers is simple and universal: Don't get trapped by routine, live different, make life mean something.
The film was spot-on in its details relating to younger men. It managed to focus on romance without being mushy or uncomfortable, which results in a rare, guy-friendly romantic movie. Overall, it was great, funny, witty and, most important, felt very real.
About the cool Don Jon movie by seekerguy2009
I liked the movie, Don Jon. It was a fun movie experience. The acting, directing, cinematography and the writing were all well done. The movie has a lot of comedy in it, which I liked. It was well put together. I wouldn't recommend this movie for anyone under 18 without parental supervision. It teaches some life lessons as well. It had some weird, awkward moments in it too but it was ok. Overall, I thought it was a good movie if you're into that kind of movie genre. - from a movie goer fan

So, JGL makes me think I can write and direct a movie...in a good way. Don't get me wrong, but the script/acting/shooting style seems very simplistic and uncomplicated. Maybe that's why I really liked this movie. It seems effortless.
It was plenty funny, with some tender moments. There were plenty of times when you could not help to shake your head, grinning and laughing at the shear ridiculousness of the characters...because you know there are actual people like this.
Great job all around, from the repetitive shots that feature a different wrinkle every time, to the tension between JGL and Scarlett, and then JGL and Moore. Tony Danza is AWESOME as Jon's dad as well.
Playful movie. Go see it.

I liked this little movie that could. JGL did an awesome job writing this, acting & directing in his debut. Everyone did a really good job with there performances which shows how good the writing is. I hope JGL gets more opportunity to write and direct again soon.
This is what I thought was a good fun enjoyable movie with some great heart and growth as a character.
Loved it by cbo65
Lots of laughs, a great movie for men or women, and I am the latter!
Things to ponder, as well as unanswered questions. Well written, edited, cast, and acted.
Hilarious and Real by apinkjo
I loved the film. I had been warned prior to seeing it that the movie "might ruin JGL for you." It did not. At all. On the contrary. I adore him all the more! I did not realize he was a writer/director on top of being an actor, and I am quite impressed by his work. The movie seemed to be filmed kind of like an indie flick, but I don't know much about indie flicks to be honest, so I can't say much on that. But I really enjoyed the film. It was hilarious, but probably not for the weak-hearted/more conservative. Definitely for ages 18+. It might be offensive to people who are disgusted by porn- but why would you go watch the movie anyway if you are?
