Deception would be laughably bad if it weren't so rotely inert.

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A would-be erotic thriller with no heat and zero chills, Deception has the kind of glassy, glossy sheen and risible story that mean to suggest "Basic Instinct" but instead invoke lesser laughers like "Jade" and "Sliver."

Strip out Deception's fleeting nudity and what's left is a throwback to "B" movie days -- a thin thriller, burdened by clunky dialogue and prone to telegraphing its twists.

Why Hugh Jackman was so excited by Mark Bomback's script to star and produce the film is as big a mystery as why such talents-on-a-roll as Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams joined the cast.

Deception is not the cool, noirish thriller it tries to be. Despite a cast that includes double-crossers Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams caught in the middle, the film is a yawn.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

not for kids

Implausible, mature thriller about a sex club.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this movie focuses on anonymous sexual gratification, money motivated blackmail, and murder. The male leads are involved in a sex club called the List, which pairs male and female executives for steamy encounters in high-class hotels. There is a date-rape scene and a shot showing a woman with her throat cut.

  • Families can talk about lust and greed. What drives Wyatt to befriend Jonathon? Why does Jonathon accept the phone calls on Wyatt's phone? When does the desire for money overtake compassion? Is this movie realistic? Why or why not?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Wyatt uses Jonathon to get what he wants. The people in the sex club use one another.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Violence against women, including a scene of date rape and a woman shown with her throat cut.

  • sex false4

Sex: Sex is the point of half of the movie. A sex club allows people to have anonymous sex, and they do -- a lot. Wyatt tells "S" that she can't refuse him sex if he gives her money.

  • language false4

Language: Numerous variations of the f-word, used lewdly and as an expletive.

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: Slick hotels, $4,000 suits -- money is more important than actual products.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false4

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Wyatt and Jonathon smoke a joint in the first scene, making them fast friends. Alcohol use and sex go hand in hand.

reviews??? by Qualitynotquantity
What on earth is the point of having 2000 reviews made up of can't wait don't care etc. I am guilty in that this is not a review of the movie but I am at least making a valid point. I am finding I have to scroll a dozen pages to get two or three sensible reviews. Come on fandango, or whoever makes the decisions, scrap this nonsense and let us read valid opinions.

Very angry. by the_chris
This movie was completely predictable straight from the begining. At first I thought it was meant to be that way, and then at some point they were going to suprise us with some massive twist, yeah............................that never happened. And the ending, what the hell was that?? I'm supposed to believe that an accountant who has never had contact with the criminal element once in his entire life (except for smoking pot when he was a kid) but apparently now has the resources to obtain a perfect fake passport and become quite the criminal mastermind now himself. I good go on banging this film up all night, but the bottom line is just don't go and see it.

I really feel deceived by aszmidt
Possibly the worst movie I have seen in years. I pretty much new the bulk of the plot within 15 minutes. Apparently I missed the memo, my wife and I were the only two people in the theater. This was on opening weekend Friday night at 8PM. Don't walk, run away from this flick.

Deception by MONE464
The movie was somewhat slow in the beginning but it picked up later in the movie. They could of added a little more substance to the movie. It had a pretty predictable ending. I am glad that I saw the movie as a matinee for a special price as opposed the full price. I would give it 2 stars.

This must be a joke. by colouredblue
My friend and I agreed, any movie with Ewan MacGregor and Hugh Jackman in it couldn't possibly be all that bad. We were wrong. The first fifteen minutes or so of this movie are cute, well filmed, and pretty enjoyable. From then on, it was a rapidly declining slope down into pretty much the pits of hell. The last 45 minutes were almost like torture. The script became so cheesy and unoriginal my friend and I were continuously looking over at each other and miming various suicide attempts. Not only is the plot predictable, the unpleasant sex scenes were gratuitous to a nearly if not absolutely unnecessary extent. And the movie is so into itself! This was the worst movie I have ever seen. My friend agrees, although it was her second worst as she has seen I Know Who Killed Me. If you want to see a quality movie, don't see this. HOWEVER, if you're in the mood for a movie you can make fun of, definitely see this one with a friend. Ewan and Hugh must have done this movie as a joke...

So predictable, I thought they were joking. by bekind2animals
This movie is so cliched and so predictable, I honestly thought....no, hoped....that there was actually a REAL surprise in store and that they were just making it LOOK predictable to throw we viewers off. But no, it really IS that bad. I love Hugh Jackman, but sadly, even he couldn't save this movie.

Deception by sdevon03
I thought the movie was a bit of a contrived script... strung together by racy sex scense... with no real substance... The actors were faily good... And the acting is the ONLY reason I give it as good as a so-so raiting...

Just out of curiosity... by Mystweaver
Why do people write reviews or give ratings for movies they haven't even seen yet? Who exactly "cares" if you are looking forward to it or not? I don't know your credentials... why should your opinion matter to me? I'm looking for "reviews"... not what amounts to website spam! Even if actual reviews were there, you can't find them without having to slog through page after page of comments by individuals with no life; commenting on stuff they have no knowledge of. This site even makes me assign a rating to something I haven't seen yet!
