The morality of revenge is barely at issue in a movie that pushes the plausibility of revenge right over a cliff.

This film is so superficial and shifts so jarringly in tone that nothing feels authentic -- not Bacon's hard-working husband and father, nor his maniacal vengeance seeker.

Aside from a stunning three-minute tracking shot as the gang pursues Nick through a parking garage, and Mr. Bacon's hauntingly pale, dark-eyed visage, Mr. Wan's film is a tedious, pandering time-waster.

While there is the requisite amount of shorn limbs and splashing blood one might expect from the director of "Saw," Wan should be saluted for putting the coup de grce off-screen.

Bears more than a slight connection to the landmark of the genre, 1974's "Death Wish," starring Charles Bronson. It is based on novelist Brian Garfield's sequel to his original book, though any resemblance is tenuous at best.

Wan's movie is very efficient. Bacon, skilled pro that he is, provides the character the movie needs, just as he has in such radically different films as "Where the Truth Lies," "The Woodsman" and "Mystic River."

expected more by Daydream
this movie was just way out there and it made you think, "are they serious?" and "would this really happen?" I expected more out of this movie. When I saw that Kevin Bacon was leading I really wanted to see it and saw it opening day, but the storyline just wasnt all there. There were some heartfelt parts, but it just got weird from the middle on.

TERRIFIC ACTING AND ACTION ! by ltcolonel
KEVIN BACON CONTINUES TO SHOW HIS EXCELLENT ACTING SKILLS AS A REALISTIC BUSINESSMAN - FATHER WHO'S LIFE GOES FROM FABULOUS TO TRAGIC IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. HIS OVERWHELMING GRIEF, RAGE AND ULTIMATLELY ILL THOUGHT OUT ACTIONS ARE ONLY TOO REAL FOR THE "AVERAGE" AMERICAN HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE. I FELT FRUSTRATION WITH SOME OF HIS CHOICES BUT UNDERSTOOD HIS STRUGGLE. THE SUPPORTING CAST WAS EXCELLENT. KUDOS TO BOTH GARRETT HEDLUND AND JOHN GOODMAN FOR CREATING BOTH FRIGHTENING BUT BELIEVABLE CHARACTERS. KELLY PRESTON CONTINUES TO SHOW THAT SHE SHOULD BE USED MORE IN MAINSTREAM HOLLYWOOD FILMS. THE FILM IS UNSETTLING BUT THE TOPIC REALLY NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED MORE. WE DO NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION AS BOTH SIDES ALWAYS LOSE !

nice action, okay plot by nmehr3
If you are into action/fighting/tough guy films, don't miss this one. But in terms of plausibility, the plot only seemed credible for the first 30 minutes... after that it became silly, occasionally cheesy, and predictable.

Amazing! by silvercrestfall
This movie has to been one of the best action / suspense films this year! Not only do the directors make you shed a few tears, but you can really feel how Kevin Bacon feels as a horrible gang tears through his family! Death Sentence is NOT a so-so!

Kevin Bacon shines by Kat75
I have seen a lot of movies this summer, but this one has to be the best. Kevin Bacon's portrayal of the broken father who seeks revenge is amazing - I totally agree with one of the previous reviews; he is underrated as an actor. One other thing though: what is it with all these people placing reviews on films they haven't even seen yet?

Death Sentence by Sunshine24_7
I cried, I laughed, I screamed ... this movie had it all ... Kevin Bacon did a terrific job!! The movie, while pretty violent - with the shotgun blasts blowing holes through the screen - was an awesome theater experience. There was a lot of blood - a lot ... but it was also entertaining. That's disturbing to me. I was entertained, yet real life is becoming too much like this movie ... our lives are becoming too violent. There doesn't appear to be an end in sight either. This movie deserves the "R" rating. And you'll still be good and pumped when it's all said and done. It's a real rush. There was one thing I didn't like -- and that was the fact the the police department seemed too unreal - unbelievable ... I am sure that in real life the police would have acted a lot differently than in the movie. All in all it was worth the adrenaline rush!! Enjoy the show!!! P.S. John Goodman was funny and did a great job!!!

Death Sentence was Action plus! by janniewannie
Great acting and great movie....on the edge of my seat the whole time...Kevin Bacon's acting was super and so was Kelly Preston's....One of the best I've seen in a long long time...Very touching family and the transformation of a nice guy into something he really was not...Great flic!

Better casting would have helped by Vegout412
I really enjoy the story line, but the casting, just left a lot to be desired. The lead bad guy was okay, but a stronger actor would of made it more enjoyable. Kevin Bacon, just came off dorky trying to transform from mild mannered to tough guy. Overall, I think they rushed trying to pull this movie together. Alot of what they left in, just scratched the surface, but didn't really help you buy into the characters. I think overall it was a good screenplay that suffered due to poor casting and bad directing decisions.

The baconator by jonesjones
I liked some parts of this movie but overall it was unrealistic and often cheesy at times. The underlying story is a good one and would come across alot better if told in a different way. Kevin Bacon's character goes from a guy at an office desk to a guy that just can't be killed. Title should have been "The Baconator"

Bacon bits...just go vegan. by Easy Tiger
Here we have a classic case of a movie with an identity crisis. It wants to be a movie about taking justice into your own hands is never the correct decision. While at the same time, practicing the opposite of what itpreaches...voraciously, boldly showing Nick dismembering the gang members and then fighting back till it gets to a piont where you just hope everyone kills each other and the movie finally ends. You never connect with any of the characters. Thanks to a poor script. Kevin is lost in his role, it's rediculously casted and there was no saving your Bacon here, it just wasn't even beginning to sizzle. Wan adds his usual brand of blood and guts but ironically thats the only guts the movie shows. It's bland and predictable movie making with some blood and bones thrown in for good measure..or as a decoy to take your attention away from a poor script. Yeah, it's definately the latter.
