Dave's Rating:

You'll get sucked into it …

Who's in It: Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, Mathieu Simonet

The Basics: North African soldiers, part of French Algeria, come to fight on France's behalf during World War II. Do you think they're treated well by their French counterparts? Given respect and praise and not at all considered to be disposable indentured servants? Do you? Hmmm?

What's the Deal? If you saw Glory, then you've seen this already. You may not have known that Algerian troops came to France to lay down their lives, but you know everything else. There was injustice, and there was tragedy. What saves it from turning into homework is the cast. Every guy here is kind of heartbreaking. You'll get sucked into it, even though you know what's around the corner.

The Perks of Walking Out Before It Ends: You'll miss the present-day Saving Private Ryan-ish maudlin stuff. So do that, and you'll be happier.

For Fans Of: Michael Haneke's immigrant-revenge movie Caché. Watching Glory will help you understand why the people in Caché were so angry.

Why Jamel Debbouze Looks Sort of Familiar: He was in Amélie. And if you're taking time out of your day to read a review of a French movie, then you probably saw Amélie.
