Who's in It:
Dave Chappelle, Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, The Fugees, The Roots, Jill Scott, Cody ChesnuTT, Dead Prez, John Legend, Common
The Basics: It's a celebration, as Chappelle himself would say, a free block party with the comedian's favorite musicians, a college marching band and a huge crowd of rain-braving fans. And it's the best movie to come along so far this year.
What's the Deal? I like it when cool celebrities use their pull to get stuff like this done. There's no agenda here, just awesome music from great bands, with Chappelle ad-libbing effortlessly between chunks of music and director Michel Gondry stepping back and using his deadpan camera to get out of the comedian's way.
Best Band: The underrated Roots, who back everyone, vocally and instrumentally, and come off as the coolest human beings on the planet. And they probably are.
Show-Stopping Moments: Any time Jill Scott and Erykah Badu take the stage. They stand out in the sea of male performers.
Whose Afro Is Greatest? There are two incredible ones in the movie: ?uestlove of the Roots has a big one, and there's Erykah Badu's huge one. But then Badu rips hers off midsong, and you realize it's just a wig. So ?uestlove wins.
