While George Lopez, Cheech Marin, and Paul Rodriguez are funny men, it's amazing how boring these Latin-shtick cutups can be when none of them gets a single good line.

Despite its superficial lip-service to self-actualization/realization, there has to be more to life than what Beverly Hills Chihuahua is putting out there, which is fit for neither man nor beast.

As multimillion-dollar frivolities about the pets of the ruling class go, Chihuahua is reasonably diverting. As one that happens to be opening in the middle of an economic meltdown, its mere existence feels utterly insane.

A filthy-rich fantasy for these cash-strapped times, Beverly Hills Chihuahua features the voices of Drew Barrymore and much of the industry's top Latino talent in a live-action talking-dog lark that should please young pups.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

OK for kids 5+

Upbeat talking-animal adventure is fun for kids.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that, like most movies featuring talking dogs (or animals of any kind, really), this upbeat adventure comedy will interest young pet lovers. The film doesn't have much in the way of iffy content except for some mild peril revolving around a dogfight promoter's mean mutt and a group of mountain lions that endanger the pup protagonist. Two dogs have a heartfelt romance, and two humans flirt. There are a few insults and some silly Mexican jokes (said by animals); e.g. "We're MexiCAN, not MexiCAN'T."

  • Families can talk about the class and cultural issues the movie explores. At first, Chloe pretends not to like Papi. Why?
  • How did Chloe's troubles in Mexico open her eyes to how other dogs live? Is that an important message for people too?
  • What does Monte teach viewers about being proud of our heritage?
  • Discuss what made kids want to see this movie -- the story, or all the advertising for it.

The good stuff
  • message true1

Messages: Mostly positive messages. The movie explores class and cultural issues. A few silly Mexican jokes (said by animals).

  • rolemodels true2

Role models: Chloe realizes that there's more to life than being a pampered lap dog,and Rachel learns to be more responsible after Chloe runs away fromher. Chloe overcomes her princess-y prejudices to form bonds withDelgado and Papi.

What to watch for
  • violence false2

Violence and scariness: Mild peril: Chloe and Delgado confront mountain lions, dog-fight promoters, and a mean attack dog. Cops brandish their guns to arrest a character, but the weapons are only shown, not shot.

  • sex false1

Sexy stuff: Dogs flirt/kiss and discuss dating; two humans also hug and flirt.

  • language false1

Language: Mild insults: "idiot," "stupid," "failure," "prissy."

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: The movie is about a pampered pooch from Beverly Hills... Brands include Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, and Gucci. Rodeo Drive is also featured.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false0

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Not an issue

I went with my grandkids and daughter to see this and we all had fun! Cute without being obnoxiously so, nice story. Good laughs for the adults too.

A touching tribute to fearless Chihuahuas. One bite, one big pain ! by cansinor
Hilarious! A rare movie that empowers Hispanics i.e.; "a mexiCAN not a mexiCAN'T" and "I'm gonna get all Mexican on him!" a quote from "Papi" (George Lopez) when he becomes angry and cries vengence. The songs are great and relative to the movie such as; "I want to be your Hero Baby" by Enrique Iglesias and, "Low Rider" by Earth, Wind and Fire. In my old school days of my neighborhood, I would have said; It's a bad*** movie! Some big time movie critics have trashed the movie but, they are Gringos! They do not truly understand the Hispanic Barrio experience. They are the opinion of Siskel and Ebert when they both trashed "Star Wars", Ha ! Their opinion matters not. Of course there was also the excellent message of being responsible dog owners and of adopting strays. I loved this movie ! Can an oldschool macho guy say all this? Check out the movie, Ese ! May the Force be with Chicanos forever ! . I dedicate this review to my fearless female Chihuahua who passed away 3 years ago.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua by REGALMOVIEMAN
IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THAT PARTICULAR GENRE. IT WAS COMICAL BUT STILL HAD SOME DEPTH. THE HAPPY ENDINGS ALSO ADDED A LOT TO THE MOVIE APPEAL; EVERYBODY LOVES ROMANTIC FINALES WHERE BOY WINS GIRL OR VICE VERSO. IN THIS CASE ALL THE CHARACTERS INVOLVED HAD THEIR HOPES FULFILLED AND LEARNED A THING OR TWO IN THE PROCESS. IT HAS NO AGE RESTRICTION AS FAR AS APPEAL; ONLY THE ABILITY TO LAUGH AND DREAM.. IT IS OF COURSE ABOUT DOGS BUT DOGS WITH VERY HUMAN QUALITIES, BOTH GOOD AND BAD. THEY SHOW THE BEST AND WORST TRAITS EXHIBITED BY HUMANITY AND THE CAPACITY TO LEARN AND CHANGE; WHICH IS OUR GREATEST STRENGTH AS HUMANS. ALL MOVIEGOERS WILL SEE PARTS OF THEMSELVES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CAST OF FOUR-LEGGED ACTORS; PRINCESS, BRUTE, HUMBLE SUITOR, STEADFAST FRIENDS, CYNICAL LEADER; AND EVEN A CON-MAN PACK RAT AND A THIEVING IGUANA WITH A CONSCIENCE. ALL SAID IT'S FULL OF LAUGHS AND CINEMATIC -ALLY BEAUTIFUL AS WELL. ENJOY THE SHOW!!!!

A Doggone Good Time by elvisbeck
What do you get when you cross "Homeward Bound", "Fight Club" and "Indiana Jones"? You get a Doggone good time! To me, this movie had a bit of everything in it. The main plot was mostly a "Homeward Bound" style story (with a bit of "Indiana Jones" and "Fight Club", along with a bit of romance), with the main "dog" trying to find her way home after she ges dog-napped. Wrap that around a dog fight ring (which is illegal, by the way), a former Kanine (and a little comedy) and you got a must-see-and-take-your-kids movie. My favorite character was Papi because he didn't give up on his girl, even though she gave up on him (and the fact that he was sort of named after David Ortiz (you know, Big Papi)). My official review: TWO TAILS UP! (I would say thumbs, but dogs don't have them).

Beverly Hills Chihuahua by annx40
My eleven year old daughter and I went to see it and we absolutely love it. There were no sex or violence so I didn't have to cringe at the lovey- dovey parts.

Best Fun Show in Years by chooperva
My wife and I saw it, because we own a Chihuahua. We were pleasantly surprised. We loved it. But, not because of the Chihuahuas. Sure, the plot line is thin, but the action is good. You don't have to worry, because you know how it will turn out in the end. It is a fun movie to just sit and enjoy. Don't try and read to much into it, like the movie critics do. It's just an hour and a half of good fun. Kids will really love it.

Wonderful! by tyncaitysmom
I was real hesitant to go and watch this movie. I thought it would be way too boring. My 12 year-old daughter and I went to see this movie and I could not quit laughing. It was a definite non-thinking movie that made me realize just what it should be like when one invests money in a movie...laugh from the beginning to the end. A real stress relief, a way to relieve a lot of stress! One can't beat laughing. You have to love Drew Barrymore and George Lopez!

Great time! by Surf-N-Turf
Fun, great actors and star cast who's voices are awesome, and the kids love it...great comedy and action, even for my 5 year old daughter. Incredible filming using live animals but they actually speak (LOL) and it was done VERY well.
