Who's in It: Maria Cina, Trish Doolan, Randall Batinkoff, Denise Miller
The Basics: A closeted lesbian (Cina) gets her ex-girlfriend (Doolan) to host her wedding shower (because, you know, that happens) and all sorts of wacky guests show up and revelations are made — about what, do you think? Maybe the closeted lesbian's sexual orientation and whom she really loves?
What's the Deal? I can't imagine any real-life lesbians who wouldn't run screaming from this exercise in goofiness. It's kind-hearted and all that, but when you're making a comedy, what good is kindness? You need wits and energy, not one more zany "character" showing up to be a one-note joke for a hundred minutes.
A Short List of the One-Note Jokes: 1. The porn star future sister-in-law.
2. A therapist who is (wouldn't you know it?) suffering from multiple neuroses. 3. The therapist's shrieking Scottish stalker. 4. The hick relative, hair in pigtails. 5. Hot pizza guys and firemen. 6. A bickering lesbian couple and wait, there's more: 7. The loony, upset Catholic mom.
A for Effort: Trish Doolan — writer, director, producer, star. A quadruple threat that is truly threatening.
Indie Movie Trap No. 2, Successfully Fallen Into: It's the one that comes after Trap No. 1 (see wacky characters above) that goes like this — you must interrupt your unfunny domestic comedy to Bring on the Earnest and Heartfelt B.S., effectively grinding your movie into the Dirt of Boredom.
