Iffy for 14+
Western remake with plenty of shoot-outs and bloodshed.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this Western stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, both of whom appeal to teens. A remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford film, the new version has upped the ante with plenty of shoot-outs and bloodshed for 21st-century audiences. But the bloody scenes are counterbalanced by a lot of conversation between the outlaw and his captors. One of the characters is a slightly rebellious teenager who, for the most part, is ashamed of his father. There's one brief love scene, one bar scene, and some language ("f--k" used a couple of times, plus "s--t," "bastard," and more).
- Families can talk about remakes. Why does Hollywood like to remake (or "re-imagine") old films? Can you think of any remakes that ended up being better than the original? Families can also discuss the two main characters. Is Wade completely rotten? What makes him a "bad guy"?
The good stuff
-
Messages: Dan wants to do the honorable thing, even if it means risking his life. Wade, meanwhile, takes responsibility for -- and never lies about -- his outlaw ways.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Dozens and dozens of men get shot dead -- at both close and long range. There's a close-up of a bloody bullet extraction. Men are stabbed, thrown off a cliff, burned, strangled, pounded with a shovel, and even shocked. Except for the bullet removal, nothing is gory, but there's obviously a great deal of violence.
-
Sex: Wade flirts with Alice. Wade kisses a waitress, and they go up to her room. In the following scene, her nude backside is shown on the bed. She and Wade kiss again. Dan and Alice briefly kiss and hug.
-
Language: A couple of "f--k"s, as well as uses of "bastard," "son of a bitch," "ass" (with and without "hole")," "s--t," "hell," and "damn" (with and without "god").
-
Consumerism: Not an issue
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Wade's gang drinks shots of whiskey at a bar.

loriGTO's review of 3:10 to Yuma by loriGTO
In an age where people don't make westerns, the director made a damn good western. It was surprisingly relaxing not to be blasted with constant GCI. Instead, the focus is on the acting, imagine that! And there is plenty of action- the great kind of action when a gun is seriously dangerous, as opposed to a super mega mutant lab ray. Great movie, and a nice change from the normal!

All Aboard by Daydream
The lead actors (Crowe and Bale) put up strong believable roles that stick with you till the end. The movie is slow to open up, but the last 1/3 of the movie is what sold it. heartfelt ending. Crowe pulled it off!! Go see this movie.

Better than Unforgiven by ScreamieB
No offense Clint, your westerns are loved, but this remake of 3:10 is the best contribution to this genre I've seen in decades. Crowe and Bale are outstanding, and the action is fast-paced enough to keep things interesting while still allowing the characters room to develop dramatically. Even if you're not a fan of western flicks, you should give this one a chance, for the acting, for the adventure, and for the scenery--you won't be disappointed.

3:10 to Yuma by Enen1
If you like westerns, or even if you don't, this a movie is a must see! It was great to see Russell Crowe so on his game, and Ben Foster has the crazy-eyed, creepy villian down pat. Christian Bale with his solid, stoic, quiet performance is perfect here. In fact, there is not one actor cast that didn't add something to the whole.
To be truthful, I wasn't sure what to expect and believe it or not, I'm a pretty harsh critic, but without giving anything away...this flick has one of the most "wicked giood" endings I've ever seen and that's saying something.
Thanks boys! That was worth my entertainment buck and then some! Yeehaw!

Shoot 'Em Up by babyjo75
Great movie. I don't particularly care for Russell Crowe but he made me feel sorry for him even tho' he was villianous! Go see it! It's great.
Christian Bale?? What's to say? He got me hooked when I saw "Empire of the Sun". Ben Foster is wonderful as his son, also.

Awesome movie! by wilsonbh
This movie starts out a little slow but steadily picks up steam as it moves along. Everyone should see this one. The ending will literally blow you away. It's really a good story and Russel Crow's performance makes this move a spectacular movie. I highly recommend this one.

Bale is good by cjtolmie
Seems like there were a lot of Western or ?Western-like? films out this year. Many of them quite good, this film being no exception. I really enjoyed Bale?s performance, I think he is a top-notch actor. Though this type of film seems to suit Russell Crowe I wasn?t crazy about his performance. However over all I?d say this movie is definetly worth a rent if you are itchin? for a show down!

A western like we have all been waiting for... by djbernard13
Great return to quality westerns - like Silverado and the old Clint Eastwoods and for those of you that go that far back, Shane! Feels like you are in the Wild West - dust everywhere, you can almost smell the sweaty, dirty clothes worn by the characters. Good "bad guy" in Russel - the guy you love to hate. And the ending was unexpected and fresh. We need more westerns like this!

Let Down by jimbeau
Baddest outlaw in town gets a heart for his captor. Give me a break. Terrible movie. A disgrace to the western genre.
