Zoe Saldana Wants to Be a Badass in Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Apr 03, 2013

Zoe Saldana wants to be a badass, this much is clear. One of the reasons we've seen so much of her fighting and kicking and shooting in the Star Trek Into Darkness previews is because she requested that her role in the sequel be badass-ified instead of settling for the love interest or eye-candy role. She's proven herself as one of Hollywood's go-to actresses for action-heavy projects (see: Avatar, Colombiana), and now she's using her blockbuster cred to gain entry to the Marvel Universe in the upcoming space-set Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to THR, Saldana is in talks to play Gamora, the team's sole female assassin, "a green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon." You can seen her on the left in the above concept image (posted yesterday), and funnily enough that image isn't so far removed from her Avatar character.

If the deal goes through, Saldana will join a cast that includes Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) and Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) in the James Gunn-directed film due in theaters on August 1, 2014. Still to cast are the remaining team members, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. In related news, Latino Review revealed that one of the film's villains may be Basil Sandhurst (aka the Controller), a henchman for Thanos, who was revealed at the end of The Avengers.
