There will be a new trailer for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and it's kind of a big deal. Sure, the nine-minute Star Trek sneak peek is important, but Man of Steel is not only expected to relaunch the Superman franchise on the big screen, but also help DC segue to a Justice League movie in order to keep pace with those maniacs over at Marvel. In an interview with the NY Post, Snyder is quiet on his film's connections to that eventual Justice League movie due to it being a "big spoiler," though he does admit that "they trust me to keep them on course," with "they" being the studio. He also adds that because of his movie, he can't see any Justice League movie going forward without acknowledging Man of Steel.
Unless Man of Steel is a total disaster (which, based on the amazing Comic-Con footage, it shouldn't be), then we can assume it will help lead into Justice League. The Post article says Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/Superman) is signed on for three films, but there's no word on whether one of those is -- or can be -- Justice League. While we wait to find out those details, Snyder went on to talk about how they approached "this as though there’s never been a Superman movie before, but at the same time respecting the canon and mythology.”
Also, perhaps in an attempt to quiet fanboy vitriol ahead of release, Snyder admitted how badly he wanted to include the red Superman tights into the costume. “I tried like crazy to keep the red briefs on him. Everyone else said, ‘You can’t have the briefs on him.’ I looked at probably 1,500 versions of the costumes with the briefs on.”
So no red briefs, but a possible Justice League tease in there. I'm of the mind that if Snyder scores with Man of Steel, they'll bring him back for Justice League. Whether that happens may depend on how well-received this new trailer is.
Alas, December should be a fun month.
