Yes, Blu-ray Bob mainly talks about theatrical releases in this column, but maybe this will drive a wooden stake through the memory of those anemic Twilight
films—for adult vampire action with serious bite, nothing beats HBO’s True Blood
. Based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood
is about what happens in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps when vampires are able to “come out of the coffin” thanks to the invention of a synthetic blood (Tru Blood). In the second season, life gets more dangerous for Sookie (played by Oscar winner Anna Paquin) the closer she gets to her vampire lover, Bill (Stephen Moyer); Sookie’s brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), gets wrapped up in an anti-vampire religious group; and Tara (Rutina Wesley) is put under a spell while her cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), narrowly escapes imprisonment by powerful vampire Eric (Alexander Skarsgård). It all leads to a bizarre pagan wedding where the goddess Maryann (Michelle Forbes) reveals her evil power over the town. Will shape-shifter Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) make the ultimate sacrifice for Sookie and Bon Temps?
This violent, seductive and sexually charged series has become the second most popular show in HBO’s long history—only Sopranos tops it…for now. Before the third season begins this summer, you can bring home True Blood: The Complete Second Season on DVD or Blu-ray on May 25. The DVD has two special features: “Fellowship of the Sun: Reflections of Light” and “The Vampire Report: Special Edition” along with audio commentaries from the cast and crew. The BD set has those features plus picture-in-picture commentary on every episode, as well as “Character Perspectives,” “Flashback/Flash Forward” that allows viewers to relive pivotal moments, “Pro/Anti-Vampire Feeds” and “Hints/FYI” (trivia facts, show hints and clues). Before the night is through, fans will crave True Blood on Blu.
