Yet Another '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' Movie Surfaces in China

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

With X-Men: Apocalypse launched successfully into theaters, director Bryan Singer is ready to move on to his next project. Last September, he announced that he would next be tackling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, based on the novel by Jules Verne about an undersea adventure.

At the time, we knew that both Disney and Fox were developing movies based on Verne's classic tale. In February of this year, we learned that 20th Century Fox had boarded Singer's project and was aiming to begin production this fall. Singer said at the time that the movie will feature "not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and [sci-fi] plot twists."

Shortly thereafter, we heard that Disney had kickstarted their version of Verne's novel by signing James Mangold to direct Captain Nemo, described as an origin story. (Disney, of course, produced what is probaby the best known version way back in 1954.) Reportedly, Sebastian Gutierrez (The Eye) was busy writing a new script.

Mangold is currently working on the third installment of the Wolverine spin-off series, scheduled for release on March 3, 2017, so we're not expecting Captain Nemo until 2018 at the earliest.

Now comes word of yet another competing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) will direct, according to Deadline, with pre-production scheduled to begin this fall, though no mention was made of who might be writing the script. The movie, to be produced and financed by Bliss Media, will be set in China and Gans has indicated that he wants to cast two Chinese actors in lead roles. Bliss Media will also distribute in China.

Although all three movies tease their connection to the Jules Verne novel, all three sound as though they will freely take liberties with the source material. On the positive side, we could end up with the opportunity to see three rousing adventures that all take different approaches to similar subject matter. We'll stay with that positive thought and hope to see at least one of them by the end of next year.
