If we had to write a list made up of the films most likely to get a sequel, 10 Things I Hate About You wouldn’t be anywhere near the top 100 (and maybe not the top 1000) – but life is strange, and today we bring you an update on a sequel to that 1999 film.
Captain America’s Hayley Atwell will headline 10 Things I Hate About Life, which explores situations that grow out of the original movie. The debut, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, featured performances from Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The original film’s writer and director, Gil Junger, has been hired to direct the new installment, based on his own original screenplay. He tells Variety he was “inspired to write the story after coming across a man who had committed suicide at a scenic overlook.” Okay…that sounds uplifting.
He elaborates on the plot by saying “It is the story of two relatable, ordinary people with normal jobs and normal desires whose seemingly great lives have become unmanageable. Two people who go to the same place at the same time to end it. … Their chance meeting is so awkward, so raw, and so funny, they postpone their intentions and go their separate ways." Judging by this synopsis, it appears as though the sequel may feature an entirely new group of characters.
10 Things I Hate About You wasn’t a huge hit upon its release (it took in $38 million at the box office), but it’s managed to stick around in intervening years thanks to cable television. Junger says he made more in residuals from the film last year than he did for directing it when it was first released.
