The YA Countdown: Comic-Con, 'The 5th Wave' Release Date, 'Frostbite' Fundraising and More

Jul 18, 2014

Welcome to the YA Movie Countdown, our resident expert’s biweekly guide to young-adult book-to-film adaptations.

YA at Comic-Con 2014

Vampire Academy, Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars have already come and gone, but there’s still quite a bit coming up in the YA movie realm. Not only is The Giver due out in just about a month with The Maze Runner arriving soon thereafter, but both of those movies and more are mere days away from showing off what they’ve got at San Diego Comic-Con.

YA at San Diego Comic-Con

Last year was a big year for YA at SDCC. Even though there won’t be as much going on this time around, there are a few young-adult entries worth keeping an eye on.

Thursday, July 24: The Giver in Hall H at 1:30 p.m. with stars Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, director Phillip Noyce, author Lois Lowry and some brand new exclusive footage.

Friday, July 25: The Maze Runner in Hall H at 4:20 p.m. as part of the 20th Century Fox panel.

Saturday, July 26: Entertainment Weekly: Women Who Kick Ass at 4:10 p.m. with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’s Natalie Dormer.

Sadly there won’t be a panel for Mockingjay or Insurgent, but Lionsgate does have a booth on the convention center floor, so, odds are you’ll still be able to get your hands on some Hunger Games and Divergent swag while you’re there.

Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy

Apparently the push to make the Vampire Academy sequel, Frostbite, is still raging on. Here’s the most recent message that popped up on the film’s official Facebook Page:

We are excited to announce that we have raised the majority of our funds for FROSTBITE - but there is one small catch (we told you this wouldn't be easy)...We need proof that the fans truly want to see the franchise continue. And so, we will be launching a crowd funding campaign and putting the power in your hands. More details to come later this week.

So, ?#‎VAFamily - Are you ready to make history? ?#‎Frostbite2015

I don’t like sounding like a curmudgeon, but really? First off, as I said the other week, there’s just no point to this. The film didn’t do poorly at the box office; it had a downright abysmal theatrical run. I don’t know where the producers got “the majority of [their] funds” from, but I can’t imagine an investor giving much money to a sequel when the first film only earned $15.4 million the entire time it was in theaters.

But really, who cares? Let them do what they want. The bigger issue here is the crowd funding. Likes are one thing, but if you’re going to start asking your fans for money, you better earn it. I enjoyed the first film, but was it worth my money beyond the price of admission? Probably not. If the producers behind Frostbite manage to make a sequel that’s actually worth the donations, that’s okay, but at this point, it’s hard to imagine a second film improving upon the first. If they do go through with this, the pressure will be on.

Allegiant

Allegiant, Theo James and Shailene Woodley

Insurgent is now well into production so that means Summit better start prepping for Allegiant. The final installment of Veronica Roth’s three-book series will be split into two films and, according to THR, The Maze Runner scribe, Noah Oppenheim, will pen one of them, Allegiant: Part 1.

Oppenheim’s only feature film credit is The Maze Runner and since that doesn’t arrive in theaters until September 19, it’s impossible to assess what Oppenheim is capable of, but if he’s getting more work, that’s got to say something about what he did for Maze Runner. The only alarming detail regarding Oppenheim’s hiring is that he was only recruited to write one of the two Allegiant scripts. Of course there’s always a chance that could change – perhaps Summit is waiting to see how folks receive The Maze Runner first – but regardless, if this one book winds up being adapted by two different screenwriters, things could get messy.

The 5th Wave

The 5th Wave Release Date

We have a release date! Sony Pictures just unveiled a teaser image for J Blakeson’s adaptation of The 5th Wave and while it’s really just the cover of the Rick Yancey book, it does have one very important new thing on it – “Coming to Theaters 1/29/16.” The film will star Chloe Moretz as Cassie, Nick Robinson as Ben Parish and Alex Roe as Evan, but we’re still without our Sammy.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Mockingjay Marketing

Lionsgate’s has always delivered top-notch promotional pushes for the Hunger Games films and movie number three, Mockingjay – Part 1, is no different. Rather than just jump right into one of those all-too-familiar, quick-cutting, montage-style teaser trailers, they’re busy building a campaign that doesn’t just show you the movie, but allows you to feel part of it, too.

A couple of weeks ago, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) began threatening those trying to topple his regime by showing off his new chess piece, Peeta. Now, in true President Snow form, he makes an even grander attempt at putting the rebels in their place. In addition to Peeta, Snow’s also got Johanna (Jena Malone) by his side and a brigade of Capitol soldiers as well. There’s no doubt the visual hurts, but those in District 13 aren’t going to let that stop them. In order to make their cause known, Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) is busy trying to tap into the Capitol’s transmission and at the end of this piece, it works.

See? It’s like a story in and of itself. You can check out the first teaser here and the newer one below:

And it doesn’t even end there. Lionsgate continued the concept by altering that second address. Check out the new version below to see what President Snow did to cover up the rebellion:
