'X-Men: First Class' Sequel Will Dive into 'Days of Future Past,' May Cross with Bryan Singer's Films

Aug 02, 2012

Get excited comic geeks – Bryan Singer has confirmed the sequel to X-Men: First Class will be titled X-Men: Days of Future Past and draws elements from the popular comic book story arc. That means Sentinels will almost assuredly be making an appearance in the new film!

IGN caught up with the producer recently and he confirmed the direction of the new sequel, saying “It’s going to be very ambitious.  It’s called Days of Future Past and it deals with aspects of that comic but also some very new things. I just don’t want to give any of it away. Matthew Vaughn will be directing and I’m totally excited about it.”

As Wikipedia points out, the storyline appeared in The Uncanny X-Men issues 141 and 142 back in 1981 and was set in a dystopian alternate reality where mutants have been placed in internment camps. Kitty Pryde has her mind transferred into a modern-day version of herself so that she can convince the X-Men to prevent an event that will spark anti-mutant movements.

What’s interesting here is that with two different X-Men timelines merging, this potentially opens the door to Singer’s X-Men films crossing over with the First Class world.

“I think there’s a strong desire to broaden out the universe.  The X-Men universe on its own is every bit as big as the Marvel universe and I think it’s time to reach out and explore it and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films, as Marvel’s done so well.  You may see some of that, I don’t know.”

Honestly, we’re not sure how we feel about this – it’s hard to wash the bad taste of X-Men: The Last Stand out of our mouths, though to be fair Singer didn't direct that one. We’re willing to give it a shot, though, because we dug Vaughn’s first film and Days of Future Past still stands as one of the best X-Men comic arcs of all time.

Check out Singer’s full interview below and let us know what you think of these newest developments in the X-Men universe.
