Twentieth Century Fox is hot enough on X-Men: Days of Future Past to go ahead and lay claim to not only a release date for the next X-Men movie (May 27, 2016), but it's also giving up its story's roots by revealing the title, X-Men: Apocalypse. This, of course, referring to the popular Age of Apocalypse storyline for the comics, though to be fair they may be borrowing elements of that storyline and not adapting the entire thing, a la Days of Future Past.
Our own Marvel expert John Gholson recently wrote about the Apocalypse storyline since director Bryan Singer was recently asked about it, alluding to the fact that Apocalypse will be set up in Days of Future Past. Here's how Gholson described the character Apocalypse as well:
Apocalypse has an incredibly convoluted backstory, but in the simplest terms, he’s a mutant despot, born in ancient Egypt, with an idea of mutant supremacy in which only the strongest of mutants are worthy of a life. His schemes against the X-Men typically see him engaging in genetic experimentation or situations in which mutants are pitted against other mutants, for his own Darwinian results. In the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline, the X-Men experience an alternate future in which Apocalypse controls America as a ruthless mutant military state.
Considering the fact that Days of Future Past deals very much with time travel, it seems likely that film's plot will bleed into Apocalypse. Just how many of the new (and old) cast members will appear in the film, we don't know. It's assumed that Hugh Jackman will be back as Wolverine (cause this guy is doing these movies for the rest of his life, let's admit at least that), but no other details have been released at this time.
Are you a fan of the Apocalypse character and storyline? How do you think it'll fit in to Days of Future Past, which hits theaters on May 23, 2014?
UPDATE 12/9/13: According to Vulture, Bryan Singer will return to direct the next X-Men movie as well, titled X-Men: Apocalypse. The site claims it will be a direct sequel to Days of Future Past (in theaters this May), set up in the final moments of that film, and it will focus only on the younger X-Men cast. So do not expect another mix of old and new X-Men members for the next go-round.
