It’s been a long and arduous journey for Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmasters – but with the release of this new Chinese-language trailer for the historical biopic, it looks like audiences will finally get to see the director’s latest sooner rather than later.
Based on the life of legendary Wing Chun teacher Ip Man (who taught Bruce Lee some of his moves), the new feature promises a one-two punch of Wong’s gorgeous visuals coupled with some bone-crunching martial arts action. Ip Man has been a popular film subject in recent years, with Donnie Yen playing the character in two much-loved Wilson Yip films based on the teacher’s life. Tony Leung will play the part in Wong’s version.
Unfortunately, the trailer isn’t in English – but the language of lush visuals and fight choreography is universal, so you can still enjoy the new clip. The Grandmasters is set to open in China on December 18. No U.S. dates or distribution have been announced, but we suspect that will change at some point in the not too distant future.
