If you remove all the Bigfoot references in this first trailer for Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek, you'd immediately think it was some kind of sequel to The Blair Witch Project. That's not a bad thing, per se, and as huge fans of Goldthwait's edgy sort of dark humor (see: World's Greatest Dad, God Bless America), we're real intrigued by his latest attempt to head off in what appears to be more horror-thriller territory.
In Willow Creek, a young couple (one a believer, one a skeptic) go off in search of the infamous Bigfoot by retracing the steps of the two researchers who captured the most convincing film of the creature back in 1967. Of course the duo bring their camera along, and what follows are snapshots of scenes that look very familiar to those Blair Witch aficionados out there. There's the weird sounds coming from outside the tent, mysterious pieces of clothing hanging on trees, and lots of branches cracking nearby to up the creepy factor.
Goldthwait is quickly becoming the sort of filmmaker you have to pay attention to because not only is he constantly trying new things and pushing the envelope, but all of his films have something to say. Something to say about who we are, why we are and what the hell is wrong with us. He's fond of themes that involve obsession and the awful little secrets we hide, and as of now we don't believe Willow Creek has been bought by a distributor. With all of its freaky Blair Witch vibes, that's definitely surprising.
