It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about The Bronx Bull – the film project that initially billed itself as Raging Bull 2, before changing its name after legal threats. The seemingly ill-advised picture isn’t completely dead, though – no, it’s apparently moving along toward a release at some mythical date in the future. As proof, we’ve got this trailer that turned up a few months ago.
We’re not sure why anyone would want to retell Jake LaMotta’s story after Scorsese did it so masterfully in Raging Bull, but the cast for this new version isn’t terrible. William Forsythe, Paul Sorvino and Joe Mantegna are headliners, and seem to be taking this all very seriously.
Unfortunately, most of the trailer looks relatively low budget and like it was made to go straight to video, or worse, cable. It sort of reminds us of how HBO used to make movies with guys like Armand Assante back in the ‘90s, before it figured out how to make awesome things like Game of Thrones and Deadwood. Those movies weren’t terrible, but they weren’t exactly big-budget studio material either. That’s the same vibe we get when watching this clip for The Bronx Bull.
Does this preview – which is admittedly much more promising than we expected back when we heard someone was making a Raging Bull 2 – actually prove that we’ll see The Bronx Bull on the screen someday? It’s hard to tell – the film still has no official release date, and as website Film Stage points out, the link at the end of the clip doesn’t actually lead to a site for the film. At any rate, let us know what you think of this trailer.
