It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the sequel/prequel to I Am Legend, but star Will Smith recently spoke about the project – and the news isn’t good if you were hoping to see the Fresh Prince reprise his role.
The actor recently conducted an interview with website EURweb.com and offered this status update:
“Producers are working on it. I'm not actually working on it. If it's great, I'm into it."
According to Smith, the producers are currently working on a treatment for the new film, which is basically an outline created before an actual script is written. This alone tells us that the movie is in the very early stages of development and nothing is set at this stage of the game.
When pressed about his involvement, the actor elaborated – saying he’d “probably not” be involved with the film if it ever gets off the ground. This isn’t particularly shocking given how the original film ends.
So, what does Smith see himself doing in the meantime? Fewer sequels and more original action flicks.
“I don't want to be the sequel guy,” he says. “I figure I've got about six or seven more years where I can run and jump a little bit and then I'm going butt and gut for the rest of my career. Butt and gut."
The actor doesn’t completely rule out returning for a sequel to some of his previous hits, but does say it would take a “groundswell of support” to get him onboard.
