Which Comedic Pair Needs to Make More Movies?

Apr 17, 2014

Who are today's equivalent of Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello or Martin and Lewis or Cheech and Chong or even Farley and Spade?

With the news that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are reteaming for another movie, following up their hit collaborations in Talladega Nights and Step Brothers with Border Guards, maybe they're the closest thing we've got. And in a way theirs is a trio if we include Adam McKay, the director behind all three of their pairings.

Others that I can think of are Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who also have a directorial third in Edgar Wright, though they've also done movies together without him (namely Paul). More and more, they're doing their own separate thing -- mostly Pegg is doing a lot of blockbuster work -- which is too bad. Isn't there room for Frost in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible movies?

That pair intially got together on television (Spaced), and maybe that's the best place to look for the next great duo to star together regularly on the big screen. Actually, there's already former Freaks and Geeks castmates James Franco and Seth Rogen. Even though This Is the End wiped away the need for Pineapple Express 2 with its parody of the idea, the two could still do more movies like that one.

Back to the small screen, there's Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who are already on their way to the big screen with some unknown Judd Apatow production as well as the Police Academy reboot. I'm not a fan of Community and haven't really seen much of them together, but I bet someone out there would like to see some movies starring Donald Glover and Danny Pudi.

Do animated characters count? Because I'd like another Wallace and Gromit movie, please. Almost related, it'd be neat to see a live-action movie starring Billy Crystal and John Goodman together. Going back a ways, though, here are some other favorite comedic pairs I'd like to see do some more movies together:

Woody Allen and Diane Keaton

Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters (never mind that their second team-up was not a comedy)

Steve Martin and Michael Caine

John Cusack and Curtis Armstrong

Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito

Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner

Which comedy duo needs to do more movies together?
