What's the Best Animated Movie of the Year?

Dec 03, 2012

The 40th annual Annie Awards doled out its nominations for the best of the year in animation today, with Disney putting up some big numbers as reps of three of the eight movies nominated for Best Picture (Frankenweenie, Brave and Wreck-It Ralph). Of course this means it's time to start calling out our favorites, too, as various films push and shove their way to the front of the pack with dreams of golden Oscar statues dancing through their cartoonish heads.

If this list proves anything, it's that 2012 was a fine year on the animated front. What I like about the Best Feature list is that none of them are sequels. All eight movies are original (save for Frankenweenie, which is technically a remake of Tim Burton's own live-action short from the '80s), and all of them are well worth your time.

Let us know which animated movie you think deserves top honors this year, now that all the major ones have hit theaters. The New York Film Critics Circle just gave Frankenweenie its top animation honors this morning, perhaps marking Burton's latest as the current frontrunner. What do you think?

Here are the Best Picture Annie Award nominees for this year:
Brave - Disney/Pixar)
Frankenweenie -The Walt Disney Studios
Hotel Transylvania - Sony Pictures Animation
ParaNorman - Focus Features
Rise of the Guardians - DreamWorks Animation
The Pirates! Band of Misfits - Aardman Animations
The Rabbi’s Cat - GKIDS
Wreck-It Ralph - Walt Disney Animation Studios
