What Is Your Most-Anticipated Movie of 2013?

Dec 28, 2012

The world doesn't seem to be ending in 2012, so we can begin to really talk about the movies of 2013. Now that we know we actually get to see them, what are the movies we're most excited to actually get to see? The latest Star Trek? The return of Superman? The thing they're calling World War Z?

As usual, the most noteworthy titles on the horizon are tentpoles. They're scheduled way in advance and carry a good deal of familiarity with them, whether they be sequels, remakes, adaptations or original works by favored directors. Usually these don't end up being the best movies of the year -- those are often out-of-nowhere surprises first encountered at film festivals -- yet many movies this year did hold up to our expectations as posted last year. The Cabin in the Woods, The Master, Moonrise Kingdom, Magic Mike, Argo, Looper, Lincoln, Django Unchained, Skyfall and of course The Avengers were among the most anticipated and are now among the favorites of 2012.

We've already posted one list of most-anticipated movies to look forward to in 2013, those tentpole types especially awaited by the geek audience, such as comic book fare Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and The Wolverine. (I'd add Kick-Ass 2, Pacific Rim, Elysium, Sin City: A Dame to Kill for, Ender's Game, Gravity and The World's End). On Monday, we'll be posting our larger, broader annual slideshow of most-anticipated films, which I'm hoping winds up with just as great a number of hits as last year's did.

Personally, I'm not a good gambling man, so my most-anticipated films are those that have already seen some light on the film-fest circuit and will be officially released in the next year. Acclaimed documentaries like Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, Joshua Oppenheimer's The Act of Killing and Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s Leviathan are at the top of my list. I'm also excited about You're Next finally coming out and getting to see it again. Finally, I'm expecting Anchorman: The Legend Continues to be a WHAMMY!
