What TV Series Would You Help Kickstart a Movie For?

Mar 14, 2014

It's always been a good topic of discussion: which TV series we would like to see continued on the big screen. Usually it's a way to imagine something that was canceled too soon being given another chance. It worked for Star Trek, after all. And to a lesser extent Firefly/Serenity. And now, thanks to a bunch of marshmallows, Veronica Mars has received a spin-off that hit theaters and VOD outlets today.

With the Veronica Mars movie, there's more hope for our favorite shows being renewed on the big screen. As long as there's enough of you and the necessary cast and creatives are willing, a crowd-funding website is all you need for the transition. Last year rumors circulated that Friday Night Lights would be the second series to head to Kickstarter on the way to heading to a feature-length follow-up.

Although a lesser sensation, there's currently an Indiegogo campaign to turn the cult Doctor Who parody Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time (itself sort of spun off from the TV show Community) into a movie called The Inspector Chronicles. Not every show has the kind of backing that Entourage has, and it's actually the really small series and Web series we suspect are the best candidates for adaptation.

Earlier this week, Judd Apatow was in the news for admitting he's still not over the cancellation of Freaks and Geeks, how everything he's done since is "revenge" for that show being shut down. Not that he'd need to go fishing in the crowd-funding pools, but there's one idea for another cult property that could use the continuation.

Not all TV series need to move forward onto the big screen. Remember what David Lynch did with Twin Peaks? Fire Walk with Me has a lot of prequel elements filling in some of the backstory of the show, and that might work for some of your cut-short favorites. And with the current trend being to have movies prequeled on TV (see Hannibal and Bates Motel), why not go the other way? How about a prequel movie about Omar from The Wire? Or the tale of the Black Rock from Lost?

Which TV series would you like to see go to Kickstarter for a movie spin-off?
