What Kanye West and 'American Psycho' Now Have in Common

Feb 19, 2014

Literature’s bon vivant and bad boy Bret Easton Ellis has always been a purveyor of pop culture. Last month he defended the 2013 hurricane known as Miley Cyrus on his podcast, and any number of his books refer to high and low culture, including his most popular work (at least amongst film nerds), American Psycho. For Ellis, everyone can be both “a porn star and a pop star.” The Canyons touched upon this concept, boasting former child star turned train wreck Lindsay Lohan and porn’s sensitive man (a somewhat ironic statement if you’ve ever seen his movies), James Deen. Now, Vice has revealed that Ellis is spotlighting another pop culture icon, Kanye West.

Here’s what Ellis told the website about a new film he penned for the singer:

It’s in Kanye Land, and that’s subject to a whole other time frame. He came and asked me to write the film. I didn’t want to at first. Then I listened to Yeezus. It was early summer last year and I was driving in my car. He’d given me an advance copy, and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this. So f**k it, I said yes. And that’s how it happened. That was seven or eight months ago. We’ll see what happens. I really like him as a person. I know he comes off in this performance-art way in the press, but if you’re just alone with him in a room talking for three hours, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Are you feeling another Kickstarter-funded film coming our way soon? Will Kanye demand better than crowd-funded dollars from us peons? Will Miley make a guest (twerk) appearance? We can’t think of a better match, really — two divisive artists making, hopefully, a great work together. Discuss.

And for those who want a taste of Kanye West as a film star, here's his 2010 musical short film Runaway.
