If New Jersey had its own version of Silver Linings Playbook, it would be Don Jon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's hilarious feature debut as writer, director and star. Complete with thick New Jersey accents, gym workouts, loud family arguments, angry gum chewing and plenty of porn, Don Jon humanizes the Jersey Shore type by burying itself beneath the muscles and hair gel with a story about learning how to connect with another human being.
It's funny and heartwarming -- and features one of Scarlett Johansson's best performances as a controlling Jersey bombshell -- but seeing as I happened to grow up around the types of people featured in the film, I thought it might be fun to do a little something different. Instead of a straight-written review of the movie, I recorded an audio review as a character from the movie. Not literally, of course, but if Don Jon himself (Gordon-Levitt) went to see Don Jon, this is exactly what his review of the movie would sound like.
For more, listen to my interview with Joseph Gordon-Levitt below, in which he talks about sex, Scar-Jo and Star Wars sequels.
Don Jon hits theaters this weekend. This one is worth a watch, bro.
Note: This review originally ran during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and the interview ran during the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.
